Intrigue & Adventure in the Shadow Realm!

A 5th Edition planar adventure for 7th- to 10th-level characters

150 pages of action and adventure by Wizards of the Coast designer Dan Dillon and award-winning RPG veteran Wolfgang Baur

The Free City of Zobeck has thrived since overthrowing the tyrannical Stross family. But an ancient bargain gives the Queen of Night and Magic a claim to the city—and now the shadow fey have seized Zobeck as their own. The city’s only hope lies with a band of heroes who can outfight and outwit the shadow fey in the heart of their own realm: the maze of treachery and deceit that is the Courts of the Shadow Fey.

This 148-page 5th Edition adventure contains 100 NPCs, a map with more than 60 locations of the Courts, and more than 40 combat and roleplaying encounters. Courts of the Shadow Feytakes you from the mortal world to the heart of Shadow, where you’ll:

  • Fight your way through the dangers of the Shadow Realm to reach the shadow fey’s courts
  • Engage in dangerous courtly intrigue, trying to increase your status to win an audience with the Queen herself
  • Duel for honor, and perhaps win the hand of a lover among the fey nobility

Can you free Zobeck from the grasp of the shadow fey? Or will your fate become a tale told in hushed tones as a warning against angering the Queen?

Does anyone know if the PDF has been updated yet? I would like to purchase a copy but do not want to do so unless it has been corrected.

I gave up waiting for this to be updated and bought a physical copy of the book.
Happy now as it is an excellent supplement.

I just got my print on demand hardcover copy on October 25th, 2020. It is still the edition with DC 30 skill checks and no fold out map. So the answer for everyone below is: No, it hasn't been corrected or updated. And yeah, the international shipping cost from Kobold Press makes it basically unbuyable from them. Too bad. This is an outstanding product marred by lack of care for customers. It was nice of Wolfgang Baur to reply last year, but it would have been better if he had actually followed up. But this is an outstanding book even with the errors.

Hi Wolfgang, according to the listing here, the product was added to the catalog on 19th March 2019 and there have been no updates since that date, so I'd suggest that the version here has not been updated. Would it be possible to check the version here as it would be great to have a current, corrected version which includes the errata. Thanks, Bruce

Hi,
I'd like to buy the printed but without assurance that the errata have been corrected I'm delaying the purchase: any news about the errata?

The print edition sold at Kobold Press does include all errata (it is a 2nd printing with heavy-duty sewn binding). Not clear whether the POD version here has the updated files.

Would it be possible to update the POD file to one with the errata? International shipping is far too expensive to buy from the Kobold Press site, unfortunately.

Are there supposed to be player handouts in the book? In the first Act, it repeatedly mentions showing the doorman at the Winter's Kiss an invitation, but the PCs are only approached in a dream and invited... absolutely nothing about a physical invite and nothing to photocopy inside the book. Also, comparing this to the Pathfinder version from a few years ago, it seems there are other handouts (an invite to dinner, frex), and many of the Difficulty tables for knowledge checks are almost identical to the PF ones -- PF difficulties are much higher than 5e, so trying to hit a DC 30 on a 7th level PC seems almost impossible.

The handouts definitely exist as free downloads, and the text of them is included in the book if the kobolds remember correctly. Though the download ones look better.

The DC 30 is definitely an error. Sent to editor for errata.

Any news on the errata? Got my book in the mail a few days ago and I have mostly the same questions as Christopher. Also, my (print-on-demand) book didn't come with the fold-out map. Is the one on your website from the 4E/PF era still correct?

Hi Wolfgang

Have the missing fold out map and errata been dealt with now? & Could the print plus PDF simply sit on the Print price rather than an extra £5?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
