Quack Keep

by Jennell Jaquays & Darcy Perry

For use with any game system, Quack Keep details the Reedy Bend Marshes on the River Cygnus, a vibrant campaign setting populated primarily by the Fowl Folk, sometimes known as ducks, swans, geese, and crows.

Reedy Bend is what some call a Nexus Point, a focus point where all the Maybes, Might Bes, and Could Have Happeneds find a way to encounter and interact with each other in a single, unlikely place.

The setting grew out of Star Hat Miniatures’ Lost in the Dungeons of Doom Kickstarter campaigns, with dozens of characters sculpted by artist Darcy Perry. Many of the characters and creatures found herein are based on the miniatures sculpted for those campaigns.

The setting features:

  • 7 detailed maps of the region
  • 77 encounter areas
  • 62 detailed character descriptions
  • 74 Story Hooks involving the characters
  • 2 Encounter tables
  • 75 Unique items and artifacts
  • 3 Appendices filled insights bout playing ducks, geese, swans, crows as player races
  • And a story scale system that uses descriptive words to rate and define abilities of characters, monsters, and objects

The residents of the Reedy Bend Marshes thrive despite the presence of Daffyd Platypyros, the devastating monster in their midst. The Reedy Bend Tales are their stories.

We invite you to join the adventure, take part in those stories, and create your own as well.

The Authors

Jennell Jaquays, a member of the Academy of Adventure Arts & Design Hall of Fame and the designer of Dark Tower, and Caverns of Thracia (Judges Guild) for Dungeons & Dragons, co-creator of Duck Tower (Judges Guild) and Griffin Mountain (Chaosium) for Runequest, and M5 Talons of Night, and FR5 The Savage Frontier for TSR's D&D game lines, has returned to tabletop gaming with Quack Keep and The Dragon's Secret.

Darcy Perry is often described as a Renaissance man, which is to say he has had a lot of experience in “doing stuff” but not in holding down “real work” for any consecutive length of time. Exceptions to that include being an acclaimed blues musician, house dad and lifelong gamer. During the (now notorious) “old school revival” movement, he set up an online blog to share his love of the hobby, Monday night gaming reports and hundreds of photos from his collections of painted fantasy figurines. As a writer and artist, he was one of the many contributors to the revised and expanded edition of Petty Gods, a fantasy adventure gaming supplement released by the Old-school Role-playing Community (ORC). Then, after 30 years of painting miniatures, Darcy began sculpting them and hasn’t looked back. With the encouragement of his friends, he launched Star Hat Miniatures in 2016.

The overall production and layout of the PDF was very high quality and the artwork is decent (certainly above average, but Jennell Jaquays has done much better in the past). The issue is with all of the duck puns. The first was amusing, the second some [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
