The Grid

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The grid - the endless runway of neon-lit data that hackers, codeslingers and A.I.s call home. It has invaded every part of modern life and made itself an unavoidable spectre that watches, listens and controls the lives of the careless and unwary. In this supplement for NEON CITY OVERDRIVE the grid is explored and explained, providing you the tools to take your games off the street and into the digitized wonderland of the sprawling data network.

This book includes:

Jacking in: How the grid is used, including descriptions of the key infrastructure and technologies such as the holographic overlay, data hubs, private networks and interface gear.

Exploring the grid: Getting around the grid, descriptions of key locations and dozens of story hooks. Run the digital streets, hang out in Underwire, marvel at the mysterious Beam or ride the information super-highway that is the ribbon.

New hazards and threats: Dangerous locations, enemies and programs are presented to threaten codeslingers and spice up grid runs. Watch out for data storms and oubliettes, defy grid cops and gate guardians and avoid the dreaded black ICE.

Playing the grid: Advice on using the grid in your games, new grid-specific conditions and traumas, and further guidance on the process of piggy-backing grid observers.

Trademarks and gear: Twenty-five new trademarks, advice on playing an artificial intelligence and examples to help you represent grid technology and programs as special gear.

The Grid continues to expand the world of NEON CITY OVERDRIVE with new character options, enemies and story hooks. Use the information as presented, or use the advice provided to adjust the setting details to fit your own vision of how cyberpunks interface with the virtual world.

NEON CITY OVERDRIVE is a fast-playing RPG of cyberpunk action. With a focus on story and action, character creation is fast and the rules are intuitive. Create any kind of cyberpunk character you want and throw them into the action within minutes.

Oh no! I am not sure what is going on. Check your emails (you should have received a link there too, after purchase), and your library to see if the links there work. If not, send DriveThruRPG a message (“Contact us” button is on the bottom left of each page). I’ll do the same and see if we can get this sorted.
If you don’t have access to the file in the next little while, pop over to my website and send me a message via the contact form and I will sort you out directly.
Let me know how you go, either way. Sorry for the trouble!

Got the basic rules and I am looking to start the campaign soon. I am loving this game system so far! Need to get these supplements too I guess since I want to give the players all the skin and psion options right away. This Grid looks like a must have.

Thanks for the positive comments - I am really glad you are enjoying the game! The supplements aren't essential, but they do provide plenty of other options for characters. :)

In my opinion this is the most playable version of cyberspace/net/grid for any RPG. It puts other 'full price' games to shame. Awesome supplement!

I like your series Neon City Overdrive very much. The supplement on the Grid, too.
This supplement though has a lot of typos. Would you mind to provide a spell-checked update, please?

Hey there! I just ran in to this product back-to-back with a phenomenal cyberpunk map creator: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/311737/Cyberpunk-High-Rise-Office--Battlemap-for-RPG-and-Minis?manufacturers_id=16809

I'm trying to help them and nudge them in to making some cyberspace overlay maps for their already amazing battlemaps..

Is there ANY way.. you could produce a system generic version of this? I mean, this is a solution to just about every cyberpunk system in the genre, I can't even GUESS at how many people could use a system generic version of this. All of them??

What's the binding on the PoD? I like to be able to lay a rulebook flat, which is easier when it's stapled. Also, while premium is fantastic, the price is jumping from July. Do you have plans to address this somehow?

Hi, the binding is actually pretty good. As the grid is 60-odd pages, there seems to be enough pages for the glue to bind to well, without being so thick that it is hard to open. Having said that, I now have copies of the thinner books (Skinjobs and Psions) in perfect bound, and they hold up alright, too. I am not sure how the books will hold up to regular squashing flat, but I can open them right up without hearing or seeing any obvious cracking.
Regarding the July price increase, there isn’t much I can do in terms of the premium colour book. I am thinking about the standard colour but I really am not a fan of the washed out pinks and purples. I might look into a black and white option and see how that turns out.
Thanks for the questions. I hope I was able to help.

Yes, thank-you. Your videos have been really helpful in seeing exactly what the differences in the printing are, and this was the one product I didn't find featured. I appreciate the reply.

Any plans to offer the Print on Demand as a Softcover Standard format? You already offer the Neon City Overdrive Core Rules in a Softcover Standard format. You might as well let people buy them as all the same option so the books match.

Although, I would prefer that you offer an all in one hardcover too. I would buy it printed in premium paper for a hardcover only. Its not worth the additional expense for a cheap and inferior quality softcover.

Hi, thanks for the question / feedback.

I originally only offered premium colour for the supplements as the very low page count of the books made the price difference negligible (less than a dollar), and the premium colour looks sooo much better. With “The Grid”, it may come out a little cheaper so I will look into it (standard colour for all the supplements).

There are no current plans to combine all the rules / supplements into a single volume. I will say, the soft cover premium colour books look GREAT and are quite good quality - I have not had any issues with covers, binding or anything else with the copies I have ordered.

I really appreciate you taking the time to reach out and provide feedback.

Thanks,
Nathan

Before I impulse buy this book, does it cause the kind of issues hacking did in old cyberpunk games where you have one hacker on the team and him jacking in is some kind of mini-campaign on its own where no one but the player and GM knows whats even going on and are supremely bored?

Thanks for the question.
This supplement describes an infrastructure that consists of holographic/AR overlay, as well as the fully immersive “grid” and groups can decide if they want to emphasise one element over the other.
Also, everyone can have access to the grid through interface chips or other tech, so can go on grid runs with their dedicated hacker - think of it a bit like the Oasis in Ready Player One. Obviously, a character with dedicated hacking trademarks is going to be MUCH better than a character without such skills.
Finally, a hacker can take other characters on a ride-along through “piggybacking”, which is kind of like a single grid avatar shared by multiple minds.
Hopefully, these options give groups enough material to customise how the grid works to meet their specific needs.

Looks good. How well would this work with another system like "Hack the Planet"?

Hi, I am not familiar with Hack the Planet, but there is a fair amount of rules / info specific to Neon City Overdrive in this supplement. You could no doubt mine it for ideas but I am not sure about compatibility.

The core Neon City Overdrive rules have a broad setting so you can adjust the details and use your own setting. The Grid supplement adds more specific details, including new trademarks (kind of like character templates) and example harm that might be suffered while grid running. It also has many example grid locations and random encounter table/prompts.

There are things in the book that could be used as inspiration in other games, but I think mileage will vary. I hope this helps.

I've liked this book a lot. It doesn't limit itself to presenting rules for hacking corpoNets, it offers an overview of what kind of Grid you want your game-universe to have. From the "everything's the NET - WiFi is in the air"cities, where Aug/Virt Reality merges with the meat world, to old-school (or post-Black Out/Time of the Red/Datapocalypse) local Nets that need to be jacked-in. The differences in how you envision the Grid will very heavily condition how the Hacker players will play their characters in the game, and is therefore a core question for every cyberpunk game.
As the Grid is a recreation subject to near-to-no rules, the chapter about Common and Unique Grid Locations and Hazards are very useful to avoid making every hacking look similar. Each location in the Net should have a particular individuallity, and this lists help with it a lot.

I think it's a very good book to read even if just to make you think how exactly is the Grid going to work in your game, and to get...See more

Hi, thanks for the comment. The work of Josan Gonzalez was not on my mind at all when I purchased this piece of art. I chose this particular image because it uses similar colours to the other books in the NCO series and the mowhawk tied back to the figure on the cover of Skinjobs. I see now I may have been subconsciously influenced by the cover of the Brazilian edition of Neuromancer when I put this cover together. Gonzalez’s work is awesome, right? I appreciate your feedback.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
