A Christmas One Shot: Marley's Scrooge Case

Marley's Scrooge Case is a light-hearted retelling of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. I wrote it for gaming groups that want to play something different for Christmas. It's designed to be played in one evening in about 3 hours with one GM and 2-5 players.

Everything you need is included in the PDFs including character sheets. Roll some new charactrs, or adapt it for your existing Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder game!

Tell Me More About the Plot

Players in Marley's Scrooge Case take an active role in the events of A Christmas Carol in order to save Ebenezer Scrooge's soul. Players play as newly deceased recruits to Purgatory's Holiday Cheer Special Projects (HCSP) division. Their boss, Jacob Marley, has an extra special case this year to try to save Ebenezeer Scrooge's soul. His plan is all in place, he just needs you new recruits to tag along and do anything the Ghosts need you to do to make sure it all goes to plan.

But, little does Marley know that Krampus himself has also taken an interest in Scrooge. The players will need to act quickly to save Scrooge and Christmas!

How Much Prep is Required?

Very little!

My fellow GMs/DMs know that homebrewing a one-shot can be hard (and rewarding!) work. My hope is that this adventure gives you a way to focus on having a good time with your friends and family while reducing the burden of prepping for the session.

All your players and GM need is a working knowledge of A Christmas Carol (having watched the best adapttion, Muppet Christmas Carol, is enough!).

GM prep should be a quick read through of the PDFs and printing out character sheets for their players. There's even included advice about how to adapt the adventure for your exsiting campaigns!

Players will handle character creation the night of. Just bring some Christmas cookies to share!

I'd love it if you gave this a shot this Christmas. And I'd be thrilled if it became a yearly tradition: something that you could haul out every holiday season for friends and family. A sort of tabletop comfort food.

Does exactly what it says on the tin! It's a one-shot for Christmas. It is very tightly written, clearly structured and good fun. Playable in a single 3-4 hour session, and you can easily stretch or shrink it another hour either way. I ran this [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
