For Coin & Blood: Second Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

For Coin & Blood is a classically-inspired fantasy roleplaying game, which takes the direction of playing the scum and villains you normally fight inmost fantasy campaigns!

Playing assassins, cult leaders, blackguards and more, For Coin & Blood is a different look at the other side of the coin of fantasy roleplaying games. Inspired by the writings of authors such as Kate Elliot, Joe Abercrombie, Sarah Monette, Glen Cook, Anna Smith Spark, Scott Lynch, and more, For Coin & Blood is dark fantasy roleplaying about antiheroes, thieves and assassins, rooted in the darkest recess of mankind’s depredations.

For Coin & Blood makes no pretenses about what it asks you to be. You’re the villains that other campaigns fight. You’re the cult leaders, assassins, fallen nobles, murderers, mercenaries, necromancers and thugs.

Please note: This game does contain strong language and mature themes (at minimum a PG-13 nature). Purchase accordingly.

Well, there's a lot of reasons. The first edition was our first "classic adventure" game, inspired by the old fantasy RPGs of the 70s and 80s.

But there were a few places we felt we could improve it after a few years. New content, clearer rules, smoother mechanics. It was Alan's first dive into that style of game design, and frankly, this new edition is a lot better.

Some of the new things we've included:

  • Improved and clarified skill test resolution.
  • Revised attribute names and descriptions to fit the theme better.
  • Four new classes: The Diabolist: a cruel and dark demon summoner, the Executioner:  a feared slayer of humanity, the Machiavellian: a scheming noble and plotter, and the Witch Hunter: slayer of mages and magic users.
  • Improved rules for hirelings, property, and more.
  • Legacy XP, so you can build your next character as you play!
  • Poisons and firearms, as well as revised gear rules.
  • Rules for: artifacts, corruption points, smuggling, investigations, journeys and travels, mass battles, light, increased enemy lists (including specific demons to summon and their pacts they offer!)
  • A full-setting ripe for your adventures (with maps!)

We've also added over 10 pages of art by Ger Curti (which comes to something like 5 half-pages, 4 new character illustrations, enemy art, 20 spot illustrations, and maps!), a new cover by Daniel Jimbert (the cover from the Spanish translation!), a new fiction piece from gaming author Mari Murdock and lots more!

a multi-genre, award-winning, best-selling, easy to learn, easy to teach, and easy to play gaming system!

How does the Lifeblood (HP) scaling being different from typical B/X-inspired games impact the combat gameplay? In particular I'm wondering about the feel in this game's own ruleset, but also how it impacts things if I was to run, say, OSE creatures using For Coin and Blood?

What are the experience resources ? Per book it seems that there is only gold per killing monster and ritual killings ? Was the experience for gold omitted by accident or is it intended ?

Hey Mariusz - due to the nature of the OSR compatibility, you can of course port in any experience system you like!

XP for Gold would be very easy to add in.

So by the book it is EXP only for enemies and rituals ? Thats very cool, I was not sure.

I know that I can add other rules. I was just curious what was the intention of authors. It makes totaly different playstyle.

Maybe Its because I'm new to old school role-playing games but I don't understand the magus' spells per level section. The spells section in the back of the book has 6th level magus spells but the class section only shows levels 1 through 5 and has no spell slots for 6th spells at all.

Hey! No worries: The intent is that those spells are narratively obtained, via an intense quest, rite, or other method the player and the GM work out. They're not inherently built into the class abilities.

A question about Degrading Weapons: it refers to the "weapons damage dice (the printed damage die above)." However I'm unsure what this is referring to.

There are no damage die listed for any weapons, not are there any listed on page 58 "above" anywhere. Does this refer to the classes base damage?

This game is pretty good so far however i wanted to give some feedback about the witch hunter. While he's no doubt weak i have no idea why he's saddled with a no bonus xp rule. Half of his abilities only do anything agaisnt spellcasters which might be one or two enemies in every big fight if even that considering this encourages a world where magic is much less common. He feels really situational and like he's missing some kind of ability where his abilities can apply to any enemy he can convince people to be a spellcaster even if he isnt one. That would have been a really thematic thing for a witch hunter, further emphasizes he's not nice and allow his cool abilities to apply to more situations if you took the time to scheme and rally people.

Why two sets of rules for magic weapons, one based on exploits and the other using corruption points, they seem to conflict a bit and the latter seems a better fit for the anti-heroic tone of the game ?

Is there a reason the full size preview is an Errata document? I'm not sure if that's the best marketing option is it? ;)

Is there another way of contact? The interest is to publish in physical format.

Does the revised edition of the PoD version include the rules for spellcasting die somewhere in it? Im kinda burnt out on vancian magic nowadays and prefer more novel approaches but it seems kind of silly to keep a 3 page errata around just for the description of spellcasting.

It does not. Those have been relegated to the errata PDF only (sorry. Our intention was to go to Vancian, so we went with that.)

The POD and PDF are already updated. The errata/FAQ is kept as a courtesy for previous purchasers who might need access. We'll clarify that in the description.

I don't understand then - The Blackguard table for spells still starts at level 1, spellcasting die is still in. I only bought it and downloaded it yesterday and it's the only version showing, dated 20th January 21 ?

I would like to ask how the XP for opponents are calculated. Especially as a 3rd-Party-Indie-Publisher who likes to keep "in line" with established rules/formats ;) Thanks in advance

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
