Sword & Scoundrel: Open Beta Document

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $5.00

Sword & Scoundrel is a player-driven role-playing game of passion, violence, and general skullduggery. It's a morality play presented as an HBO character drama, set against a backdrop of intrigue and swordplay in a dark fantasy Renaissance setting. It's a game where players declare what's most important to their characters and see it challenged through play. It's a game about seeing how far you will go, what lines you are willing to cross, and what (or who) you are willing to sacrifice for what you hold most dear.

The edition available here is part of an ongoing public beta test. The document is available free of charge, but if you find value in it you can support us by donating above. Funds donated will go towards buying art and other production expenses in preparation of a more complete product.

Thanks for your support.

My last hope for "what-would-TRoS-3rd-edition-look-like" rests on this game. And reading the text of the beta it's clear these guys learned the lessons of The Forge community. That also means that if you like games like Burning Wheel and its Narrativist inclinations, you're gonna love this too. In fact, this game is what would happen if The Riddle of Steel and The Burning Wheel had a child.

This game is a new iteration of another (unreleased, in beta, and abandoned for this one) game from the same developers, Band of Bastards. It was going to be called Song of Blades, but because of another game called Song of Swords (now available, different designers, also a TRoS-like) it needed a name change. Confused yet?

Slick, faster combat than TRoS, and much easier to learn too, with all the great combat features of TRoS and none of the downsides. What's not there to love?

Kickstart this already!

What iteration are you actually talking about, because I´ve lost count. The last time I went to check, since next to nothing is said here, I was deeply troubled to see that yet another "iteration" of the Beta was in the works, changing/revising what looked like key features. As someone pointed out in the forum they just keep changing, and changing and yet never actually manage to finish the book.

Eventually the book will come out... eventually. Wether it will be recognizable as S&S (and never mind Band of Bastards) is entirely uncertain at this point.

Hi Alexander. It's a new iteration of Band of Blades (effectively a different game), which was left in beta but you can still get from the website. Song of Blades was what this new game was going to be called but they changed it to Sword and Scoundrel because of the name of another game in developlement at the time, Song of Swords (now released, different devs).

Band of Bastards you mean...

I know they left Band of Bastards in beta and went for another version, but that seems to be the trend. There's always another iteration, another version, and so far none has left the Beta stage till a new different idea comes along and a new version goes to the forge. Hence my question about what iteration (of "Sword and Scoundrel") you were referring too because even of S&S there are already several... all never quite finished.

Right, true. But I have good news. The Beta document will be updated here at DriveThroughRPG soon, probably this month still. At the moment the only thing missing from the system is magic, which is the next anf final step. Things are also gearing up for the Kickstarter, including illustration work etc (looks great!). The game WILL come out, and the Discord channel is very active. This one isn't vapourwere.

It seems a new update was released but in a weird, very unfriendly format. And it doesn’t seem they intend to update the file here.

This seems a bit erratic, but eventually (I hope) a book will be released. Key word is “eventually”.

I wish there will be at least some mention of "Burning Wheel", the game you unrespectably copied.

Lol. We've never been shy about any of our influences. Norwood himself (Riddle author) is a consultant and has been credited in some form from the beginning. Moreover, wherever we've released appendices material there's an entire section dedicated to influences and inspiration, detailing what came from where.

Thanks for posting.

The pace at which this project seems to be "developing" appears to be terribly slow, with very long lulls with few information about it's progress. A shame...

When can we expect this project to go to KS stage, or at least release a "full" beta version of the book?

Is this project dead? It would be a great loss if it were so given its potential.

Not at all. There's a pretty major revision draft in the works that will be coming out at some point relatively Soon™. I've been plucking away at it as I've had time. Thanks for the support!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
