The Dungeon of Abkadev

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $3.50

Deep within a mountain dungeon of this or some other realm lies a tome so powerful that few who have gazed upon it have lived to tell the tale. A dungeon created by an eldritch mind so devious, it is unknown even to you: the erudite apprentice of an equally eldritch mind.

In this solo adventure gamebook, you take on the role of the wizard M'Nop's capable apprentice. Your task is to infiltrate the maze-like dungeon of the mad wizard Abkadev. Face cannibal guards, fungi of every deadly description and more as you work your way to the heart of the dungeon and the Tome of Vyzx!

This is my first "One Hour Dungeon" - a series of short 100-passage gamebooks that feature the plot of a winner of the One Page Dungeon Contest remixed in gamebook form with an adaptation of a classic gamebook rule system.

The Dungeon of Abkadev is based on a 2016 OPD grand prize winner of the same name. It's an old-school dungeon crawl, so of course the Fighting Fantasy rule system was chosen! In particular, DoA uses a close adaptation of the Fighting Fantasy rules found in the Citadel of Chaos by Steve Jackson.

The original map by Maezar was closely adhered to, although it isn't exactly the same. Of course, some details were fleshed out, and a couple rooms just couldn't fit into the 100 passages. Though the writer was not so cruel as to stock the dungeons with the instant-death passages early gamebooks were rife with, there is an emphasis on particularly nasty death scenes, however. All totally avoidable providing you're smart, prepared, or lucky!

This gamebook has everything you need to play a classic gamebook dungeon crawl except a pencil, paper, two six-sided dice, and your imagination!

Here are some details:

  • 40 pages, 15000 words
  • roughly 10mb file size, 90dpi
  • printable 8.5 x 11 inch PDF
  • download for free or pay what you think it's worth

Thank you for downloading!

Had great fun with it, and was wondering if "Escape from Ghjekl!" was out?

SPOILER!

In section 95 you fight a giant roach and when you defeat it you get seven gold and turn to section 66. In section 66 you also roll for gold for the pile of gold treasure. I assume the 7 gold in the previous section is wrongfully plaaced there, isn't it?

Hi Kim! I say keep the 7 gold pieces in addition to the amount rolled in section 66. I'm not sure what my reasoning was at the time, but IIRC the 7 gold was on/in the creature's body (video game logic) while the rest was in a pile. Changing or clarifying that part is a great suggestion, though. Thank you!

I recall when i started the layout there was some issue with producing both versions. It's definitely something I'll consider returning to in the future, though. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for asking! I haven't planned on doing a sequel, I included it as part of the reference to the map I used (which had it's own fictional unplanned sequel).

I am working on another gamebook, however. No ETA as of yet, but I'm shooting for this fall (2018).

Hello, I tried to open this with Foxit Reader and Phantom PDF and they both crash when going to page 3.
It does work in Acrobat, though.

Thanks for downloading! I downloaded Foxit Reader, but didn't see that behavior using Mac OSX 10.11. I didn't try Phantom, but am I right in thinking they use the same PDF renderer?

Since you mentioned it happens on page 3, my guess is that it has something to do with the digital text boxes. I really added those as an afterthought, so I would be happy to upload a PDF version without them if it helps you. As a side note, I also added some links to web pages on page 2 and 39, IIRC. Have you had any problems with those in Foxit? If so, I'll remove those also.

Thanks again, I hope you like the gamebook!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
