Class Warfare is a rules supplement for the Dungeon World role-playing game that provides an alternate and expanded system of character creation. It can also be used to create new character classes, just like those provided in the original rulebook. How Class Warfare does this is by breaking down the Dungeon World character class into smaller pieces—like specialties and archetypes—and showing you how they fit together.

Specialties
A specialty is a collection of special abilities that describe one facet of what makes a character’s interaction with the rules of the game unique. Think of it as a shtick, perhaps, or a set of skills, even. Each specialty is approximately one-third of a normal Dungeon World character or character class. The Ranger, for example, is an archer, a hunter, and someone who has an animal companion—three special abilities. In Class Warfare terms, each of those is a specialty.

Archetypes
Each specialty is categorized into one of five different groups, called archetypes. These are general character “types,” that include: adventurer, disciple, magician, rogue, and warrior. Your archetype helps determine your damage die and your maximum hit points, and puts a few limits on which specialties you can combine together.

Basically, it means that if you focus on combat-oriented specialties, you end up with high damage and high hit points, which makes fighting an attractive option for you to take. If you focus on magical powers, you’re much less good at delivering blows or shrugging them off, even just using the basic moves. This encourages you to use your magic and stay out of fights.

Building a Character
You create a starting character by choosing an archetype and two or three specialties. But specialties can also be used as compendium classes, so there are ways to learn new abilities outside your original character concept if you undertake certain quests or perform certain feats. You are not limited only to the choices you made during character creation.

A World of Options
Each of the five archetypes in Class Warfare has between 14 and 21 specialties to choose from, which can also be used as compendium classes. Or loot the moves for your own new classes. Class Warfare is a giant toolbox geared toward one thing and one thing only: awesome characters for your Dungeon World game!

Dimensions
The Class Warfare pdf is halfletter digest size, 5.5" wide by 8.5 " high. The print version is US trade size, 6" wide by 9" high (the same size as Dungeon World), and uses the newer, much improved 330-page Condensed layout. Both old and new versions of the layout are provided in pdf in the zip file.

How does monstrous heritage work? Specifically this part:
"Then choose up to three heritage
moves to start with, from the monster moves that best match your
heritage."

What monster moves???

In the Dungeon World rulebook, each monster description includes a list of moves, in bullet points. These are the monster moves referenced in monstrous heritage.

Yeah, I only figured out how to break the druid down and replicate it after I published Class Warfare. I ended up doing a blog post about it later though, which you can find at this address:

Sure. There's nothing specifically sci-fi flavoured in Class Warfare, but both books are written for use with Dungeon World.

On pg206 of the condensed guide, the Summon Monster spell calls for a 1d6 roll to pick the traits of the monster but only lists 5. Was this intentional? Thanks!

Hi Michael. Yeah, there's only 5 traits. You can choose the same trait more than once if it makes sense. So if you rolled 6 traits, your monster would probably have two useful adaptations, or two stats at +2 (or maybe just a lot of HP!). I probably should have made that explicit in the text, sorry for the confusion!

I had a question about the Twilight Reckoning ability for the Psi-Knife specialty. What exactly does it mean by "their life" when you sever it. Does this mean you instantly kill them?

I guess so, yeah. Although there might be other things that happen when you sever someone's life from their body, depending on the campaign setting.

I recently got a chance to use this supplement. I found it to be very thorough with tons and tons of great information and ideas. One minor issue I had was how spells are organized. It would make more sense to me to group spells more by function. For example: Healing, Damage, Charm and Crowd control, Travel, Buffs, Debuffs, Summoning, Utility.

Thanks for a great supplement!

I'm struggling to find out what Monstrous Heritage refers to when it says "choose up to three heritage moves to start with, from the monster moves that best match your heritage". One answer is that there are Monster moves in the book, which there aren't. Another answer is that it lets you have three advanced moves from Monstrous Heritage that you can only use through Blood and Tradition...which makes no sense because the Monstrous Heritage advanced moves are almost exclusively upgrades. A third answer would be that the book asks you to invent 3-4 balanced moves in the creation of the Monstrous Heritage character. Which, I guess, that's fine, but completely and utterly unclear.

Sure, that could have been explained in more detail. Monster moves are the moves that monsters have, called out in bulleted lists along with their descriptions. They are all in the Dungeon World rulebook, since Class Warfare is about PCs and has no monsters in it. These are the same kinds of moves the Druid gets when she transforms into an animal.

This is another silly question ^^; What are the dimensions of the printed Class Warfare book as sold on DTRPG? On Lulu it's listed as a 6x9, digest-sized volume, the same as Dungeon World proper, and I'd like to make sure that the version I get will fit nicely on the shelf next to DW.

I'd also prefer, of course, to get the book + PDF bundle like you sell here. ^^;

Seems I forgot that info in the description! I've added it now. All my Dungeon World books are US trade size, 6x9, the same size as Dungeon World.

Lulu does not do bundled pdf+print sales, so the pdf is only available here.

Is the Class Warfare book licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license the way that Dungeon World was? It seems like an awesome system to build on, and I could easily see myself buying the hardcopy for reference if so.

Yes! The entire text of Class Warfare is released under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike International 4.0 license (cc-by-sa). You are free to use it for whatever you want as long as you credit the original author(s) and release the results under a creative commons license. Since the book also contains material from Dungeon World and other sources, there's a list of who wrote which moves and what book they come from in the credits and indexes, for ease of reference. Personally, I would love to see people using it to create new things.

The print version from drivethrurpg has a front section -- the first 10 or so pages of the book -- that includes apparently stock photos of bald eagles, humpback whales, ducks, glaciers, and pencils. These photos don't look like they belong in the book. Is this a printing error?

Hi Adam. The print version is nearly identical to the pdf version. A lack of pictures, or pages that include photographs or other pictures not related to the text, are printing errors. If you receive a book that is printed incorrectly (whether it's mine or someone else's), contact DriveThruRPG and have them send you a replacement copy.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
