The Sprawl: Mission-based cyberpunk, powered by the Apocalypse

Glide through the most secure corporate computer networks. Crack the ICE that stands between you and that big score.

Drop your cyberlinked autoshotgun to the floor empty. Flick chrome blades from your fingers. Dive into the midst of that corporate response team to secure your team’s exit.

Turn up your synth-leather jacket against the rain. Watch the back-alley entrance of the club for your target. Tail the armoured limo through the neon-bathed streets.

Cut power to the alarms. Drop over the wall into the compound. Slip past the auto-sentries. Locate and secure the prototype. Escape under the eyes of the rotor-drones.

Whatever your story, you are the extended assets of vast multinational corporations, operating in the criminal underground, and performing the tasks that those multinationals can’t do... or can’t be seen to do. You are deniable, professional and disposable.

The Sprawl is a game of mission-based action in a gritty neon-and-chrome Cyberpunk future for an MC and 2-4 players.

  • Create your own Sprawl at the nexus of bleeding-edge technology and fragile humanity
  • Play hardbitten professionals caught between ruthless corporate interests
  • Win sometimes, lose sometimes and be double-crossed a lot

There are a thousand stories in The Sprawl. What's yours?

Is this a standard size book? As American games tend to be in?

6x9 if I examined my PDF right. (Some might call this the "indie standard"; 8.5x11 is falsely called a "standard" when there are tons of games out there that don't use the size.)

Does this include all rules or do I need a separate Apocalypse book to play?

Hi Liam, I replied to your message on The Sprawl's Facebook page, but in case you see this first: The character sheet (playbooks) are one of the files in the download package: "TheSprawl_Playbooks_v1.2.zip".
Enjoy!

Hi Neil, the focus of the game is corporate crime and manipulation, but there's no reason you couldn't make one or more of the "Corps" into explicitly criminal organisations if that's the sandbox you wanted to play in.

The filename of the Midnight edition PDF says v1.1, but the edition notice inside the PDF says v1.0. Was the edition number missed or do we have the wrong PDF for this package? Thanks!

Yup, that number just didn't get updated in the Midnight PDF. You have the correct PDF.

i'm curious if anyone can say if the softcover has a white border around the dark main body background? i believe the hardback's "premium color" should have edge-to-edge color, but uncertain on the softcover's "standard color".

In both the hardcover and softcover MIDNIGHT editions, the black background colour goes all the way to the edge of the page. There should not be a white border on the page edges.

The game sounds great but some game terminology I don't understand. Playbooks? I saw a mention that they are character sheets? Clocks... this I have no idea about. Please enlighten me

Playbooks are essentially classes in the Powered by the Apocalypse system. They define a character's realm of expertise and what moves they can learn. Clocks are simply a timing mechanic; e.g., the more you XXX of a corp the more their clock fills up, and when it hits midnight then something bad happens.

Playbooks are classes and character sheets.

Clocks still not sure. How about an example? My character does something, hacks off the Corp, their clock increases. Eventually it... times out? and the Corp does... what? Try to kill the character? Less drastic but along that line? Attack the character's ally, family? Attack the character Rep? Wealth? Or is it whatever the MC decides?

Is there a chart to help the MC decide how far the clock advances each time? MC just decides?

In one of the reviews I see there is a mission clock? This too is run by the MC? Does the MC run all clocks?

Moves sound like a D&D Feat, cool cosmic things that differentiate 2 different same class characters? Or just differences between character classes?

The chrome I glen from the various and sundry examples looks good

The main The Sprawl book discusses the clocks a lot and gives examples of how to use them. I also recommend The Mission Files supplement, for a lot more examples of how to use clocks and structure missions.

I picked this up on a whim at shop if visited last weekend while on a trip to Phoenix. Any chance I can get the digitals here on DrvieThru as I like having all my pdfs in one place online? I can email you a copy of the receipt, but couldn't find any contact info on your website.

I have played and ran Dungeon World before, but only played Apocalypse World in a play-by-post format. I am very much interested in this book & system but how likely am I to understand & *get* this game should I wish to run it?

Thanks for your interest, Robert!

There are several reviews in various places online and several actual play examples on podcasts, youtube or twitch (I'd post links, but DTRPG doesn't allow that). Those might let you judge whether the style of play that _The Sprawl_ produces fits with your own preferences. If you have particular questions or want to discuss the topic with others who have read and played the game, there's a G+ community and a subreddit, or if you tweet at @thesprawl_rpg on twitter, I can retweet our question to get feedback from players and GMs. I hope one of those methods suits your preferred information gathering style!

I can't say I've encountered many people who didn't understand or *get* the game, although some people have had questions about various specific things. The G+ community is a good place to see what kinds of questions have been asked and what kind of answers have been given (by me and others).

Thank you for the speedy reply, Hamish!

I'm currently watching through Adam Koebbel's playthrough of your game to get more of a feel for the game, but thusfar I think you have a customer in me!

A follow up question - is there a timelimit on the current discount in place for a book & pdf? I'm currently debating between the two styles before I deliberate on a purchase.

No timelimit. What looks like a discount here is just the way DTRPG displays bundles. My policy is the the PDF always comes for free if you buy the physical copy.

I need a quick clarification. There are different pages midnight and noon, but it also says "Product includes three versions of the PDF"

If you buy one PDF do you buy them all or are they separate?

Customer avatar
Hamish C September 07, 2017 11:40 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
The separate page for NOON is a workaround because DTRPG won't let you have different layout versions of a Print on Demand product on the same product page.

Regardless of which you buy, you get all three PDFs, so if you just want the PDF, it doesn't matter which page you use.

Holy crap, a 1star review because of 2 things which can easily be left out of your game if you don't like em.
You even don't have to change anything mechanically.
Jeez

Bought from a FLGS, so i can't give a proper review here. But if i could it would be a 4 to 5star review.

Rating aside, if someone doesn't like clocks or allowing player choice in whether something is a setup or an ambush, then The Sprawl might not be the game for them. :)

Howdy. I purchased this book at my FLGS but it doesn't include the printable playbooks, move sheets & MC play sheets that this pdf purchase includes. I am this close to buying this here so I can get all this stuff because I can't seem to find an online resource for theses things. Does such a resource exist or do I have to just buy this pdf? Thanx in advance

The playbooks and playsheets are also hosted in the Download section of my website (DTRPG doesn't allow external links, but you can either follow the "Publisher Homepage" link on the right-hand side of this page, or go to ardens dot org).

For FLGSs that participate in the Bits and Mortar program, the playbooks and playsheets should be included with the PDF when you download it from that site.

No repurchase necessary!!

Hey Hamish! A few friends and I just finished wrapping up a two semester long Campaign of the Sprawl. One of my players actually drew a painting based off of her character which i think you liked on facebook.

In it we learned that one of our players was an AI. We witnessed the rise of a cybernetic race. Kidnapped a bunch of people. Had my players sent to a corporate black site in Nunavut, and then had an adventure to rescue them. They stopped genetic plagues, got tangled with the yakuza and even blew up the world trade center to permit a bank to do insider trading.

I felt the system naturally created tons of actiony moments but the one thing i found missing was the ability to edit the odds of success. Like i understand fast talk should be used for standard employees and guards but against a major boss i just felt like it should have been a harder roll.
Im not sure my players really minded however as I made it clear that if they fail on a boss or at a critical moment things would...See more

Thanks Kevin! It sounds like great campaign; I'm glad you had fun with it!

The way you handled it is the simplest: making a harder MC move on a miss. The consequences of failure to convince the CEO that you should be in their penthouse apartment are worse than if you fail to convince the snitch to spill the beans on a scientist on the run, after all.

I like the occasional use of Fast Talk on major characters, but if you find that its coming up too often and the narrative is suffering as a result, that would be the perfect place for a custom move: "When you try to fast talk a CEO/the CEO of NuTech/etc, roll X..." and maybe make the 10+ a big less conclusive, or the 7-9 results harder (he does it now, but who does he mess with tomorrow?).

I'm absolutely in love with this game. It's so amazing! I bought the hardcover, PDF, and some super special, stainless steel dice to use for when I play this game

Are there currently any plans, or at least brainstorms for more content? It seems like a pretty complete project that can definitely capture Cyberpunk in its entirety. But goddam I just want nothing but this game in my life. <3

Thanks Brett!

There are a few more things in the works arising out of kickstarter stretch goals: a set of 1000-4000 word settings, a set of missions (of a similar format and length to The Kurosawa Extraction in the book), Necropolis (a detailed cyber-gothic setting complete with some new moves and playbooks), and Touched (a detailed cyber-magic setting complete with new moves and playbooks). The first three and in a quite advanced stage and the last is still in playtesting. No dates on any of them, mostly because I'm busy with my day job at the moment, but they're all ticking along. I hope to have updates on my blog, ardens dot org, over the next few weeks.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
