Fly with the dragons of Ansalon!

Within the long shadow of the dragon overlords' domains, villainous schemes approach fruition. Only a handful of courageous heroes dare to challenge these ruthless wyrms--and their success or failure will determine the future of Krynn.

"Wings of Fury" provides a wealth of detail about the mightiest creatures of Krynn. The handbook within this box, "Dragonlore," presents details on all aspects of dragonkind, including the following:

-The history of Krynn, told for the first time by its truly epic participants--the dragons.

-Extensive descriptions of the Dragon Realms ruled by the overlords, including the schemes, resources, and weaknesses of each.

-The lore of the ten clans of ancient dragons, including revered elders of each, current strongholds, and traditional enemies and allies.

Wings of Fury also features "Wings Over Ansalon," an adventure that pits the heroes and powerful good dragons against the might of the great red dragon Malys herself! The adventure is playable by itself but also serves as the epic climax to the "Dragons of a New Age" adventure cycle. A full-color poster map details the Dragon Isles, the idyllic realm that has been clanhome to the good dragons for the last fourteen centuries.

Now is the time for the heroes of Krynn to arise and take their stand against evil and destruction--for if the forces of Malys advance unchecked, the end of the world cannot lag far behind.

Wings of Fury uses the SAGA dramatic adventure rules from the DRAGONLANCE: FIFTH AGE boxed set.

Product History

Wings of Fury (1998), by Douglas Niles, is a draconic sourcebook that concludes the initialFifth Age saga. It was published in March 1998.

Origins (I): After the Heroes. The Fifth Age SAGA line led off with four heroic splatbooks, each of which highlighted one iconic class and each of which continued the "Dragons of a New Age" campaign. Wings of Fury (1998) was their successor. It details the other important group of the Fifth Age, the dragons, and concludes the "Dragons of a New Age" story.

Origins (II): The Future of the Fifth Age. So where does the Fifth Age go from here? TSR had planned for a setting book linked to Heroes of Hope (1998), which was Citadel of Light (1998). They'd also scheduled another core rulebook, The Bestiary (1998).

After that, it appears that the plan was to incrementally advanced the metaplot of the Fifth Age with books such as The Sylvan Veil (1999), but none of those books would appear in their original form. Instead, a meeting in June 1998 would change everything, pushing the Dragonlance line in two contradictory directions for its final years.

The Media Tie-In. Wings of Fury completes the adventurous retelling of the "Dragons of a New Age" trilogy. However, that's all in Act I of "Wings over Ansalon", which matches the finale of Jean Rabe's The Eve of the Maelstrom (1998). After that, players continue traveling to the never-before-seen Dragon Isles.

Adventure Styles: Episodic Encounters. "A Killing Frost" follows the typical SAGA style: episodic encounters are divided into acts and scenes.

Adventure Tropes: I Am Become a God. The players must stop the red dragon overlord Malystryx from becoming a god … except it turns out that they're not his main adversary.

Adventure Tropes: You And Him Fight. The players get to watch as Malystryx and Khellendros battle. The GM is further told that "they immediately kill any hero foolish enough to confront them".

Expanding SAGA. Wings of Fury is full of special rules for dragons. It revisits overlords and dragonspawn and also provides a variety of special rules for normal dragons breeds. However, the most notable new rules are probably a short sequence for aerial combat.

Eras of Krynn: 416 AC (33 SC).

Exploring Krynn. Wings of Fury begins with a lengthy historical background, all from the dragons' point of view. Much of this history previously appeared in Niles' short story "Aurora's Eggs" in The Dragons at War (1996) and in his follow-up novel, The Dragons (1996).

After that it moves on to dragon homes, beginning with the realms and lairs of each of the dragon overlords. More notably, there's extensive detail on the dragon isles, or the "metal clanhomes", which are located "somewhere to the north of Ansalon". These Krynnish lands had never been seen before and mark a nice expansion, complementary to DLR1: "Otherlands" (1990). They'd get more attention a few years later in Stephen D. Sullivan's Crossroads novel, The Dragon Isles (2002).

The adventure itself spends quite a bit of time in the Dragon Isles, but also visits others locales such as Sanction Valley and the Desolation of Malystryx, which was formerly Balifor and Goodlund.

Monsters of Note: Dragons. The original Dragonlance was all about the dragons; now Wings of Fury offers the most detailed account of Krynn's dragons ever. All ten traditional colors of dragons get attention, including ecological information.

However, the most revealing section may be the few pages that highlight the "unusual" dragons of Krynn; it verifies the canonicity of the non-standard dragons also found in the Dragonlance: Fifth Age (1996) rules. They are: sea dragons, who are an old favorite; fire dragons, who are from the Chaos War; dracoliches, who are an unusual inclusion for Krynn; and shadow dragons, who appeared extensively in the Dragons of a New Age adventures.

NPCs of Note. This is the book for your dragon NPCs. All of the major overlords are here: Beryllinthranor, Gellidus, Khellendros, Malystryx, and Onysablet. The major overlords also appear in the adventure, which focuses on Khellendros and Malystryx. Many lesser lords are also here: Cryonisis, Fenalysten, Frisindia, Iyesta, Lorrinar, Mohrlex, Pyrothraxus, and Stenndunuus. All of the lords also get minions. It's a great time to be a dragon ruler in Krynn.

Besides the major overlords, the adventure features several other characters of note. Goldmoon was of course a Hero of the Lance. Some of the others, such as the brass dragon Iyesta and the Sanction Vale warlord Hogan Bight had previously been mentioned in Legends of the Lance #1 (Winter 1998) and would return in City of the Lost (2003) by Mary Herbert. Finally, the adventure of course features the
Heroes of Heart, this time starring >Blister Nimblefingers, Dhamon Grimwulf, Ferilleeagh Dawnsprinter, Jasper Fireforge, and Rig Mer-Krel.

About the Creators. Douglas Niles was one of the writers for the original Draognlance Chronicles (1984-1986) and has since focused mainly on novels, such as The Dragons (1996), one of the major sources for this book.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
