A book of monsters written by Patrick Stuart and based off drawings previously provided by Scrap Princess.

The book is hand assembled and that is probably a nightmare if you like clean graphic layout and white spaces, oh and the font size might provide difficulties for readers who have trouble with that kind of thing so click on preview to see if it is a good thing for you. There is about 100 monsters all co-sharing an implied setting , but each can easily used apart from it. It includes an appendix with some other miscellany about the monsters and the world. It can be enjoyed as some weird piece of experimental fiction as well being used to give you bizarre newness for your world creation

"I'll just say that anyone who has any interest in monsters, weird fiction, or the stranger, more conceptually ambitious end of roleplaying games should really, really get themselves a copy. You won't regret it."

"Well, Fire on the Velvet Horizon for the most part manages to completely do away with the "this with a this" formula, and that is just about the highest praise I can possibly think of for a monster book."

"Fire on the Velvet Horizon is a monster book, but that description seems reductive. Scrap Princess and Patrick Stuart have produced something very avante garde and truly unique."

"I read a lot of fiction, and the creativity here is on par with some of the masters. Gene Wolfe displays this kind of creativity in his novels. Borges describes the type of hells these creatures inhabit in passing. McCarthy has the type of poetic turn that takes your mind from where it is and puts it somewhere you are not. This is what the book does."

"Patrick Stuart & Scrap Princess' Fire on the Velvet Horizon and Rafael Chandler & Gennifer Bone's Lusus Naturae have redefined the monster bestiary for role-playing games and have basically made every single other such book boring, backwards, and useless."

When the book arrived this week, I just had time for a quick look and selected three entries to read at random -- and was blown away as they were not only evocative, but highly gameable. With such dark creatures, authors occasionally make the mistake of making them super-powerful, but this is not the case here. I can easily imagine putting these into a wilderness area, a random encounter table or at the heart of an entire adventure, too. Stellar work!

In case you're in the same spot I was before I got this, the POD from Peechu or Lulu appears to be quite a bit better than the one available through drivethru. No fault to the authors as I understand this is pretty much out of their hands.

The book of course is fantastic and I thoroughly recommend picking it up.

Any chance of a PDF release? Shipping to my location is prohibitively expensive. But, I can get stuff printed at a reasonable price.

So this book is super dope! I saw the review on Questing Beast awhile ago and finally got to pick it up for myself. This is exactly what I want out of a monster manual. I want ideas for how things should move or behave. I want the flexibility to put them into whatever system I am currently playing in. It sparks creativity and I am in love. The art is fantastic (though might not be for everyone) and I really enjoy the writing process (that is described in the forward). Basically Scrap Princess drew a bunch of pictures then Patrick Stuart wrote the monsters around that. I am assuming there was some refinement after.

There are a few issues here though. There are MANY grammar issues even in the first couple pages. However, Patrick was kind enough to mention this in the forward so feel free to shake your fist at the sky while reading it and curse his name.
Secondly, I think the font is a little too small. At 36 I wouldn't consider myself a curmudgeon but I found the text a bit small and occasionally...See more

I can't seem to locate the Contessa bundle, that event/special seems to be over. Can someone point me towards the current method of purchasing this product?

Pretty neat presentation. Cool video and an honest take upfront about price and quality. I won't be a buyer because it's not my thing, but well done.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
