Product History

FR12: "Horde Campaign" (1991), by Curtis M. Scott, is the twelfth book in the "FR" series of sourcebooks for the Forgotten Realms. It was released in October 1990.

Continuing the "FR" Sourcebooks. Prior to the release of "Horde Campaign", the "FR" series (1987-1993) had been dominated by geography supplements with the occasional digression into a crunchier book like FR4: "The Magister" (1988) or FR7: "Hall of Heroes" (1989). "Horde Campaign" was something totally different — not only for the "FR" series, but also for TSR specifically and for the roleplaying industry generally. It's essentially a military history book of the sort made popular by Osprey Publishing (1969-Present), but for the world of the Forgotten Realms.

"Horde Campaign" is full of in-character material that could be found within the world of the Realms — an idea that TSR had also toyed with in a few of its "GAZ" books (1987-1991) and in the short stories included in its Dark Sun (1991-1996) books. The idea of in-character source material would appear in the wider roleplaying world with books like Chaosium's King of Sartar (1992) and White Wolf's The Book of Nod (1994).

"Horde Campaign" contains not only details and maps of the battles of the Horde, but also 16 full color pages depicting the equipments and clothing of the peoples involved in the war (just like the Osprey books did).

Continuing the Horde Event. The "Horde Campaign" is also the last major element of TSR's Empires event, which had included a trilogy of novels (1990) the three "FRA" adventures (1990), and The Horde Barbarian Campaign Setting box (1990). The novels had detailed the assault of the Mongol-like horde on other lands, but the adventures had only touched on that peripherally, instead focusing on a smaller storyline influenced by the Empires event. As a result, the full Empires event hadn't yet been detailed in any actual gaming bookk. Though it trailed the rest of the Empires book by half-a-year, the "Horde Campaign" finally rectified this problem.

This was all part of a slow evolution of how TSR dealt with major events, and quite different from the Dragonlance (1984-1986) and Avatar (1989) events, where novels and adventures had moved along in lock-step.

The Battlesystem Connections. Rather surprisingly, "Horde Campaign" is so-focused on being a historical document that there are almost no game stats! In fact, the only statistics to be found are three pages of Battlesystem (1985, 1989, 1991) stats, highlighting TSR's perennial mass combat system.

Expanding the Realms. "Horde Campaign" reveals the full scope of the eponymous invasion. It also provides details on some of the countries touched by the invasion, including Khazari, Rashemen, Semphar, Shou Lung, and Thay. Though countries like Shou Lung and Thay had been described in previous supplements, for others, this was their first chance to shine.

About the Creators. This was Curtis Scott's first major work for TSR. He'd continue to work for them for just a few years, through his authorship of "The Ivory Triangle" (1993) for Dark Sun.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
