The Veil: Cyberpunk Roleplaying Powered by the Apocalypse

ADD TO WISHLIST >
The room flickers in front of you for an instant like a PMP losing reception. You hear the hammer snap back on a cheap poly and you can almost smell the ozone as the bullet glides out of the chamber. The window flies apart in shatterproof shards the size of disembodied limbs. Your neurochip feeds you the trajectory of the unequivocal sentence of death speeding your way as your eyes swivel in their machined sockets. Juice crashes through your veins. You've only got a split second to make a move. What do you do?

The Veil is a collaborative storytelling game Powered by the Apocalypse designed to tell cyberpunk stories of your own making. Use world building tools to come up with unique settings that look and feel like the cyberpunk you and your friends have always wanted. Put questions that drive your characters at the heart of heists, mysteries, and conspiracies. Break a near future world and then try to put it back together. Play to find out what happens.

For some reason, the playbook pdf that I got with my purchase appears to be missing the second page for the Wayward Playbook. Any reason for this?

Indie Press Revolution stocks it and is a distributor as well. Normally we would have copies over at the samjokopublushing.com website, but we are relocating stock to a new fulfillment service. But any local shop should be able to order retail copies via IPR. I know that 401games.ca also has some copies, but I am not sure how their international shipping is.

Absolutely. Normally we have stock over at our website: samjokopublishing.com but we are currently shipping most of our items to a different facility. However, if you're in the U.S Corry, indiepressrevolution.com carries all Samjoko Publishing books and has cheaper shipping. If you're outside of the U.S the shipping can be pricey.

Just curious about why there is no Hardcover version of the Veil available? As a book of nearly 400 pages a paperback seems a bit risky as opposed to an offprint Hardcover.

As an indie outfit, we like to keep our price point as affordable as possible. Our shipping partner is one guy operating out of a hobby shop in Korea. It costs about $15 to ship the softcover book out. Hardcover shipping would be substantially more because you need different packing materials and it would increase the weight of the parcel. Be quite the price jump when coupled with the increased unit cost of printing the hardcover as well. At the time of publication it was the best option for us.

Ok, makes sense. If I may ask how well does the book hold up to use. Like said I am a bit worried about the glue holding up on a paperback of that size.

Edit: You havent thought about a PoD option here? Softback and a hardback option could both be put out then with the buyer having an option to choose. Though PoDs still have the glue issue so if your offprint has better glue then I perfectly get that you choose to steer away from PoD.

My copy hasn't had any problems. I haven't heard from anyone else about a problem. It's a good quality offset print run. It looks like we could do softcover PoD but I think it would be wildly expensive at full-color and 400 pages. We might do it when all our offset run is done, but I think it would not appeal to people at the price point. Uncanny Echo is 200 pages and was pretty expensive, but still competitively priced with other stuff, just barely. DrivethruRPG doesn't have a hardcover option for graphic-novel sized products, so that's why it isn't available. But I doubt it would appeal for price point reasons as well.

Just curious, came across a footnote on Wikipedia about a 'PbtA' similar game on Kick-starter, but from New Zealand and called 'The Sprawl'. Huh? What's up about that?

The Sprawl can be found here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/171286/The-Sprawl----MIDNIGHT?term=the+sprawl

It's a very different game. The game is also PbtA but is structured for characters running missions that effect different monolithic corporations you create at the start of play as a group.

Hi Brett! There is only the 2nd printing available for purchase (that I'm aware of, anyway). It's easy to tell the difference: the 2nd printing version has the above cover, whereas the first one had a different one. 2nd printing has been in circulation for over a year. You can nab the 2nd print run from Indie Press Revolution if you're in the U.S, or our website (samjokopublishing.com) if you're international.

PbtA means the mechanics are inspired by Apocalypse World, ie 2d6 with failure, partial success, and success being the possible outcomes for any given roll. That includes things like Dungeon World, Monster of the Week, Monsterhearts, etc.

We can't do a POD actually, we would make a hardcover option but Drivethru doesn't support the dimensions of this book (graphic-novel sized) and the softcover is available through Indie Press Revolution and our website already.

Hello,

There’s a playbook that you and the table fills out together for the world to facilitate world creation. The playbooks you choose also add certain elements into the story. The only thing that’s really set up is the augmented virtual world, The Veil, that sits atop reality. Cascade is full of unique settings for groups that would rather dive into something that is already set up for them.

With as many changes as there are will the second printing version get a PoD version so we can buy it for print?

Hey Stacie! We are figuring that out now, actually. We are doing another print run for soft cover. But a number of people have said they only want a POD version and only want hardcover. We might have a hardcover just on here. The better option will always be the off-set print run and not print-on-demand, though. But for those people who want POD only, at least that would accommodate them. We did a hardcover print run of Worlds In Peril and so many copies were damaged in shipping, it wasn't really worth it.

We may have this second printing at IPR and our own site, http://samjoko.storenvy.com/
Then have hardcover POD here for people who want that. We are still working out the particulars, though.

For those people who want the cheaper and off-set print run we might make a slip case or something. Still thinking about it.

That sounds cool. I have the current softback but with all these changes, which seem to be rather extensive, and knowing myself, I'd be open to getting a second printing copy somehow in print. Hardback premium option here would be an instant buy. :)

Well, we for sure will be printing it in softcover as an off-set run.

It seems like enough people Only buy PoD on here to warrant a hardcover here since we wouldn't be responsible for the shipping of hardcovers, they would be. It would just also be really expensive. Space Wurm Vs Moonicorn, for example, is not graphic novel size and is 400 pages full colour. So it might be around the price point--if we were to go that route.

Looks like DrivethruRPG only supports the format of this book in softcover currently. If they ever change that so hardcover is also supported I'll add it. As is, no point. We are doing an off-set print run in softcover already. When that's printed I will make sure to insert a note and place a link to it in the product description.

I'm not affiliated with Samjoko (just doing research and deciding if I want to buy the Veil or not), but I noticed they have a post about it on the G+ page, here: https://plus.google.com/communities/111282641132726730775. Short version appears to be they removed it in response to accusations of "cultural appropriation."

Thanks for that! Not partaking in social media such as G+ makes it hard to stay up to date on such things sometimes. Reading through that I understand why they did what they did, though actually knowing Japanese I feel that 'obligation' does not really accurately capture the whole underlying concept of 'giri'. I don't think there actually is a good encompassing translation in English for the term, but I don't begrudge them being rather safe than sorry on touchy subjects like cultural appropriation.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
