Hunter: Tooth and Nail

The Stuff of Nightmares

These monsters are the stuff of the primordial, collective subconscious. They’re born of nightmare, and grown through legends of dragons, sphinxes, leviathans, and darker things still.

Some take up the Vigil to do battle against the greatest of monsters.

Will You Slay The Dragons?

Tooth and Nail is a bonus chapter/companion book to the previous released Hunter: Mortal Remains that explores antagonists inspired by the Beast: the Primordial RPG.

Hunter: Tooth and Nail includes:

  • Fiction and story hooks to bring these beasts of legend to your Hunter: The Vigil chronicle.
  • New bestial Dread Powers.
  • New Compacts and Conspiracies which hunt the monsters, but also sometimes hunt the zealous heroes that hunt as well.

This book was made possible by the backers of the Beast: the Primordial Kickstarter.

Hunter: The Vigil Second EditionHunter: The Vigil Second Edition

Hunter: The Vigil Second Edition is a standalone game that can be played by new or existing players. The lore has been updated to not only reflect the uptick in monsters, but also the fact that hunting monsters is not exclusive to a location, group of people, or time period. There may be more monsters than ever before, but now there are more ways to fight them, too.

In Hunter: The Vigil, anyone can be a hunter — provided you are committed to the hunt. It is a game of personal horror and sacrifice that tests relationships and encourages teamwork within a cell, compact, or conspiracy.

Hunter: The Vigil Second Edition includes:

Hunter presents a core set of rules and three options for gameplay for new or existing players. This game includes:

  • Overview of a hunter’s world and lore, the types of hunters you can play, and three separate tiers of gameplay.
  • Six compacts and six conspiracies with Endowments for tiered play.
  • Character creation, rules to hunt, equipment, Tilts, and Conditions.
  • Monster creation and locations where to hunt the strange and unexplained.
  • The Slasher Chronicle, Storyteller advice, and more!

Good things about this book:
1: The Merrick Institute
2: Yuri’s Group
3: The cult that hunts Heroes can easily be remade into a Begotten Cult that’s actually secretly being led by a Begotten rather than a real Compact. They basically are a Cult already.
4: Small segments in which some of the Hunter writers seemed to be taking the bleep out of Beast.

It is truly amazing how much the writers seem to hate heroes. The introductory chapter talks on and on about the complexity of morality and how diverse a beast's motivations and personal believes can be. But heroes are always zealous psychopaths who rationalize their atrocities away. "Decent" Heroes are a possibility but they don't get discussed anywhere. A book that says "There are no bad people, only bad actions." and then define a group of people as "they do bad things by default" doesn't really believe in the former.

It’s a Beast book pretending to be a Hunter book.

As someone who actually likes Beast the Primordial, would I find this book interesting? If I played/ran Beast, would I find the Hunter C&C detailed in here interesting? Does it remind Beasts that there are other things they need to worry about besides Heroes, Insatiable, and extended Family to worry about?

What I'm asking is: Would this book be worth it to fans of either Hunters or Beasts?

As a GM for Hunter, I think it's mildly useful. I'm running a full kitchen sink game, and so had to at least try to include Beasts. For my purposes, this book is significantly better than the thoroughly mediocre BtP core book.

I don't GM BtP, and never will, as I don't especially like it. I can't imagine it being of too much use for you there, though. Many of the descriptions of things in T&N are set specifically for the Hunter point of view rather than the Beast one. The way the mechanics of actual Beasts as written are made, a NPC Hunter cell that actually threatened Beasts would be quite a stretch.

Beasts, yeah. Hunter, not so much. It's still very, very much drunk on Beast's "Beasts r gud n everybody's friends" koolaid. The default assumption seems to be that hunters will be automatically siding with Beasts and see Heroes as horrible monsters. Which, from my perspective, makes zero sense

For Beast fans, yes. For Hunter fans, no. It’s a Beast book pretending to be a Hunter book, so Beast fans will love it and Hunter fans will hate it. Fans of other game lines that are able to think critically will hate it for the same reasons they hated Beast.

Why would Pentacle mages like Beasts when Beasts feed on peoples’ souls by mind raping them into psychological trauma? Souls are the most sacred things to Pentacle mages. Forsaken should hate them because they stink up the Shadow. Sin-Eaters should hate them because of all the suicide ghosts they leave behind. Changelings should hate them because every last one of them survived supernatural abuse. The Lucifuge should kill them on site because they’re literal demons who worship a demon as their mother goddess. They’re massive Mary Sues partially because they make everyone like them despite how illogical it is.

Nice to see discussion is discouraged when it's not positive. David Hill is not a good writer if you want your role-playing pandering and politic free. If you don't mind this, then go for it.

Made a previous comment about wanting my escapism to be free of political discourse--especially when the options contained in the book only skew one way. Not happy with that, is all.

Good day.

I found the content of T&N rather less painful to read than that of core BtP (especially the truly awful pre-KS edit). Had some concerns in that regard, but I think overall the book works aside from some very clumsy sections that reek of the self-insert nature of beasts.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
