Can you survive in a world gone mad? A world where civilization as we know it has been destroyed in a cataclysmic holocaust? What is left in this world? Find out and encounter such bizarre things as mutated plants and animals more terrible than you can imagine, radiation wastelands that stretch as far as the eye can see, and fearless machines gone uncontrollably beserk . . .

This is the setting for a GAMMA WORLDcampaign, with players taking on the persona of an individual character somewhere in this forbidding locale. In a quest for survival and in search of a better future, the players adventure across the land, enduring hardships and encountering dangerous obstacles and mysterious foes - never knowing quite what to expect. The result is a game which can go in many directions, but which will be challenging and fascinating no matter what the outcome.

The GAMMA WORLD™ Set includes all the basics needed to set up your own "world": game booklet (packed with terrible mutants, as well as guidelines for creating additional ones of your own), a large campaign map (designed to be easily modified by individual gamemasters), and a full set of polyhedra dice. The only other things necessary are a good imagination and a spirit of adventure! The GAMMA WORLDrules are also suitable for use with the ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONSTM rules.

The GAMMA WORLD challenge awaits you - are you ready?

This digital edition includes the PDF version of the book, and a ZIP file containing printable JPGs of the campaign map.

Note on the print edition: The maps and other elements have been added as bonus pages in the print book. If you plan on using the map at your table it is recommended that you purchase the "Multiple File Formats + Softcover Color Book" combo and print the digital version.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

I see that they have 1e and 3rd, 4th, but no 2e.
How about a PoD of the 2e rules + pdf of the 2e boxed set materials?

This is misleading - it needs to be edited to indicate the "multiple formats/softcover" option only gives you the printed book, without dice. It's a relatively small matter except when you consider international customers, who are better off buying the pdf only and getting it professionally printed locally. You can't print dice - yet, anyway, although I expect 3D printers of decent yet cheap dice will be an option eventually.

I will say I was quite happy with the look of the paper book. It looks superior to the original, as far as I can tell.

Is this the rule book or just a setting?
Customer avatar
Frank W November 06, 2018 1:04 am UTC
It's both a rule book and the setting.

It gives flavor for the setting including cryptic alliances and some light details on world building as well as the history leading up to 2471.

There are a number of creatures provided as well as a wide range of mutations and rules for creating plant-monsters and robots.

There is also a full-sized poster map of America which is on a hex grid and left almost entirely blank for the GM to fill in as they please.

You should update the description to clarify that a set of dice are not included.

I'm hoping you're being sarcastic and/or ironic.

Agreed, if they are shipping a hardcopy to you - which is the attraction here - then it's not unreasonable for them to toss in a few dice, as they said in the description.

I can see that that is not their intent but I can also see the description directly contradicts that ... which is a bad idea, legally!! The law cares about what you said, not what you meant to say.

"This is a scanned image print file."

You really want them to scan an image of a "full set of polyhedral dice" and send it to you?

This is going to be so much fun! I missed out on this when I played a lot of D&D in my youth so seeing it available now made me so happy.

The scan is very clean and the full-sized map is available in fairly high resolution, included as 6-JPG files which can be printed.

Really hoping the two modules are added as well GW1 "Legion of Gold" and GW2 "Famine in Far-Go"

Also would be great to see some of the Dragon Magazine Articles and Scenarios collected especially Dragon Magazine #25 which had some clarification around artifacts, more thoroughly fleshed out Cryptic Alliances and a map indicating where these alliances operate in relation to the ruined cities of 2471.

I'll definitely be picking up the POD version when I get closer to forming a group!

Does anyone happen to know if this is perfect bound or saddle-stitched?
Customer avatar
Donald S October 19, 2018 8:58 pm UTC
Perfect bound. Not a bad job, either. Only had mine for a couple of days, so no durability impression at this point.

I ordered mine on the 14th of october and it arrived today (9th nov). So that's not bad, except i had no way of tracking it to find out when it would arrive, so the postie bashed quickly on the screen door and left before i could get up to it, then i found the card which put the parcel at a relatively distant post office instead of the local one.

The local handles parcels - i checked - but it is more convenient for the postie to use the other one, so i had to travel all the way to it, which kinda defeats the point of a home delivery.

Pages are thick and durable. Be careful with the bindings, though. They can split if you're too rough on them.

Yeah! it's not bad i wouldn't say high quality though and is the 3rd printing version, 1981! some of the text is not totally straight on the page, but i think this is as good as it's going to get. Until someone really takes the time to do a full HQ restoration Anyway! it's one hundred times better then the crappy scan copies you find out in the internet wastelands.. I'm thankful they released it along with a Great Quality version of the map..

I wonder if it might be better to wait or if this is the best the book will ever be.
I remember there was some complaint about the Rules Cyclopedia but those issues were ironed out, so maybe WOTC will give Gamma World some cleaning.

Great game. Old style box set with just enough rules and the rest is the DM's sandbox. Can be played straight or as wahoo! style as you like. I've had the paper version of the box since 1982 and have had literal decades of fun playing and running this. This year marked the 40th anniversary of this edition and it still draws full tables (and requests for more) when I run it at conventions.

I ran a GW campaign for almost a decade from 1982 to 1991. It was a homebrew world with a ton of homebrew rules but my group loved it and would most likely have gone on for another decade if the house we had been playing had not caught fire with the rules and all my notes/maps in it.

The first Post-Apocalyptic RPG! At 64 pages, the game packs a lot of fun into an easy to read rulebook. Gamma World does a great job providing a framework for GMs and players - rules, character creation, mutations, and monsters of the taboo lands. It's light on number crunching, leaving a lot of room for role-playing.

Fantastic mood setting introduction by Gary "Jake" Jaquet. Great artwork by Dave Trampier and David C Sutherland III.
It does not include any adventures.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
