City of Mist: Player's Guide

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Player's Guide includes everything essential for players of City of Mist, both old and new - an introduction to the setting, tools for creating unique modern fantasy characters, the complete cinematic game rules, and a dramatic character development system.

What's in this book:

  • Chapter 1: The Lowdown has the inside scoop on the life of a Rift (a Player Character) and the process of awakening to the legend within you, with an introduction to setting of “the City”.
  • Chapter 2: Who Are You? is a guide to the Exposition Session, in which you and your group create your City of Mist series. It includes the complete character creation system using 14 mix-and-match themebooks (questionnaires), quick character creation options, a system of crew relationships, sample crew themes, and the crew themebook.
  • Chapter 3: Working the Case explains the game's cinematic rules system, focusing on the eight core moves, the four cinematic moves (Voiceover Monologue, Flashback, Montage, and Geek Out During Credits) and providing ample optional rules to customize your game.
  • Chapter 4: Moments of Truth describes the game’s signature non-linear character development system which drives your character to explore the Mystery of your Mythos and go through dramatic moments of transformation, such as loss of a loved one or gaining new powers.

This product is featured in the Core Books bundle alongside the MC Toolkit

City of Mist is a role-playing game of film-noir investigation and super-powered action. It is set in a modern metropolis rife with crime, conspiracies, and mysteries. The protagonists are Rifts, ordinary people who became the living embodiment of a legend, their Mythos. While your Rifts may seek to strike a balance between the mysterious nature of their Mythos and their mortal aspirations, the powers within them always threaten to tear their lives apart. They have unwittingly become a part of a secret world of clashing stories, and soon other legends will come looking for them with demands.

City of Mist is based on the story-driven Apocalypse Engine, but it takes a step further into narrative gaming by introducing several new features:

  • Rich character motivations built around compelling Mysteries and Identities. Follow your characters’ themes to gain their benefits and evolve them or go against them to discover new aspects with a unique non-linear character evolution system.

  • Know no limits for powers, abilities, traits, gear, or allies. Everything in City of Mist is described by free text tags, so you can create exactly the character you want.

  • Full-on narrative engine, with an edge. Every action you take in the game is based on the interpretation of your tags, using moves to deliver dramatic outcomes that drive the story forward.

  • Status spectrums, a new system of ‘narrative damage’. You can use descriptors to create any imaginable setback or advantage so that every action in the fiction, in and out of combat, can have lasting gameplay implications.

FAQ

Do I need both books (Player’s Guide + MC Toolkit) to run the game?
You only need the Player’s Guide to run the game, as basic MC rules are included in the free Starter Set. The MC Toolkit provides resources for MCs who want to create and run their own cases and series, such as case-writing guide and a bestiary, as well as narration tips and MC move guidelines, but it is not required to run the game.

Why did you split the original Core Book into two books?

The original Core Book was simply too big and as a result both daunting for new players and unwieldy. We wanted to make City of Mist more accessible to everyone by releasing the core rules in one volume and the resources for MCs in another.

If I have the original Core Book, do I need the new books? What am I missing if I don’t get them?

The new books contain exactly the same content as the original Core Book, with the following exceptions:
  • The MC Toolkit contains a full ready-to-play case, Gambling With Death, that is only presented as an outline example in the original Core Book.
  • The new books have the Yellow Pages - summary and reference pages at the start of every chapter.
  • The content in the new books is arranged differently, with setting materials moved mostly to the MC Toolkit and the Core Moves appearing before Game Resources in the rules chapter.
  • The new books contain some corrections to errors found in the original Core Book.

Does anyone know if they offer a discount or free copy of the PDFs if I own the physical copy?

Could you enumerate some of the changes to this edition? The previous edition was one $25 book, so before I buy a new edition split across 2 $20 books I'd like to know what's new.

The original Core Book was simply too big and as a result both daunting for new players and unwieldy. We wanted to make City of Mist more accessible to everyone by releasing the core rules in one volume and the resources for MCs in another. So you don't need to buy this if you have the original :-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
