Did you include an Alpha Channel in the webm Files? Neither VLC nor Premiere recognises the Alpha Channel if i import the File. For some reason its played with an alpha Channel in Chrome. Could you send me a recoded version with the alpha channel? Quicktime should support that...

Hi Maximilian, the files do have an alpha channel as you could see with Chrome, but keep in mind the webm format is not supported by some desktop applications by default where the background will be rendered usually in black. Sometimes there are plugins/codecs for said apps that will render them correctly, but in general they're supposed to be used on the web or with tabletops like Roll20 or Foundry VTT.

To all those considering if this works in Arkenforge, I can confirm that the https://dungeonchannel.com/dungeons/videos/SnowRegular_10x10b.webm works perfectly in Arkenforge.
With arkenforge I can combine maps from dungeondraft, build maps in arkenforge - in between layers I can run mp4 with clouds (setting opacity to allow see-through) and on top I could add the animated weather overlays from dungeon channel. Good for running an Eberron Sharn map (city of towers).

(i'm running my games on a horizontal tv with my players around it)

Hi Lars,

May I ask how you got these to work in Arkenforge? When I import them I get a black background and very large white particle effects. Tried using the chroma key to remove the black background but it doesn't end up looking good.

It seems it require a lot of processing power to render these in Arkenforge. I recently had to use a weaker pc, and I experienced what you say. So I suppose rendering of the videos can be quite processing heavy.

Hi Juan Manuel,

The animations come in webm format, however they are also sold on the Roll20 Marketplace. If you'll be using them in that VTT I'd recommend you purchase them there, as uploading animations to Roll20 tends to take an extremely long time.

Cheers,
Nick

Hi Nicolas,

I just bought your animated weather overlay pack. But i didn't check if my softwar (mastertoolkit from arkenforge) can take .webm. So i can convert the webm into gif and png sequence (with alpha) but the render is not the same with what i saw on video presentation. With rain from top the rain drops are very big. I suppose Roll20 can interprate a media like an alpha cache and manage the inlay. How can i have the same render in a gif or png sequance ?

Hi Benjamin,

Roll20 does nothing special to the webm files, if anything there's a loss in quality as they re-compress them. What formats are supported by Arkenforge?

If you can import a PNG sequence into it that should work fine, however a GIF will not be possible as its transparency is always 100% or completely opaque, which wouldn't work with any of the effects as you'll end up with completely white blobs.

Make sure you're using the correct files: You have A (cropped) and B (shrunk) versions of each effects at different resolutions. The B version will give you the smallest particle effects.

Cheers!

Hi Nicholas,

I purchased the Weather Overlays in Roll20 and am noticing two issues:

a) there's a flash when the animation restarts

b) more significant, the animation settings are apparently set to loop a specific amount of times instead of infinitely. I've tried several sizes of the heavy fog files and they all ultimately turn to an opaque grey, blocking everything underneath. -- The only way to get the animation back is to reload the map, which is not practical. This makes those tiles unusable imo.

Hi John,

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with the animations. I can assure you they work perfectly fine as-is, but the Roll20 platform seems to still be having problems rendering all animations properly, especially large ones such as these. If you want to test them outside Roll20, you can see how they work in your browser here:
https://dungeonchannel.com/dungeons/videos/Fog_10x10b.webm
https://dungeonchannel.com/dungeons/videos/SnowRegular_10x10b.webm

They were supposed to solve all these problems and add new features if they released their "Layer Up" update back in April, which was also going to add a layer specifically for animations and other improvements, but they keep pushing it to focus on their Fog of War issues which is why I haven't released any new animated packs on that platform yet. The first problem you're encountering was in theory resolved already, as can be seen on the Animation Feedback thread here: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/7368016/animation-feedback-thread-2-dot-0...See more

Hi Nicolas,

First, I just wanted to say that the effect is quite nice. This is the best fog effect I've seen and really contributes to that creepy feel. Nicely done!

Second, the overlay does seem to be working quite nicely in Firefox but still not in Chrome, where it ultimately becomes opaque, this after updating Chrome and trying it again without hardware acceleration. I'm not sure I'm in the position to prescribe which browser client to use to my players. But wanted you to know that I was able to get it to work in FF and to offer that verification of your recommendation for DMs in case they run into that same issue.

Hi John,

Thank you for the kind words and for letting me know about your tests. I completely understand, I don't think forcing your players to potentially use an unfamiliar browser is an ideal situation; hopefully it's something Roll20 will be fixing soon. If you'll allow me to make it up to you in the meantime, I'd like to send you a copy of your choosing of any of my products on Roll20 or here if you prefer. Just send me a private message (https://app.roll20.net/users/402762/nick-s) with your Roll20 or DTRPG account's email and the pack you'd like and I'll send it your way. I know it's not the same as the weather effects, but I hope it's something all your players will be able to enjoy until those are working properly for everyone.

Cheers!

Hello. I watched the YouTube video, and the effects look amazing. The video’s caption noted the animations are intended to be used with Roll20. Do you know what other programs are compatible with the animations, and specifically, do you know if they work with MapTool? Thanks!

Hi Eric, thank you for the kind words!
The video does indeed mention Roll20, but that's simply because it was the only place they were being sold during release. If you were going to use them there however, I suggest buying from their marketplace as uploading animations to that platform takes ages, and they can be a tad slow until their "layer up" update coming in about a month.
As far as I can see, MapTool doesn't support animations, but it's not a platform I use so I can't be 100% sure. You might have better luck asking in their forums (If needed, you can mention these are transparent webm files, encoded with VP8). Regarding other platforms that support them, I believe Astral will be one of them very soon with their 2.0 update around the corner, and Arkenforge might already do so (I haven't tested there yet to see their performance and compatibility with this kind of files, but I will soon). There might be others, but I'm still working on compiling a list of supported platforms.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
