Xboat No. 1

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to Xboat!

This is a science fiction fanzine, with most of the material suggested by fans who love Traveller. It's about discussion, example, and bold ideas.

Great Content...

Each issue is 24 pages (5.5 x 8.5) and has content such as:

* Starships profiled and illustrated to inspire.

* Equipment. Various types, ready to use.

* Characters.  Detailed for use in your games.

* Scenarios.  Situations to drop your players into...

* Aliens.  Strange new peoples to visit and interact with... or play one as a character!

* Beasts.  New, interesting, and perhaps dangerous creatures await the intrepid explorer.

* Robots.  Yes!  Thanks to Traveller5, robots are first-class members of the Traveller game now.

...And Beautiful Artwork

Illustration is half of inspiration. My fantastic backers made it possible to jam in a generous helping of quality art into every issue.

I have leveraged the experienced and capable Ian Stead, Robert Pearce, Tim Osborne, and Brian Stearns for beautifully themed artwork.  Ian's starships are iconic, and Robert's characters and creatures are inspired.  Tim's aliens are simply fantastic.  Last but not least, Brian is admired for his work with Zaon, and his starship art is sleek and classy.

Do you ever intend to make these zines POD or compile them into a physical book?

I do have plans to move them to a POD format. It's not my highest priority, but yeah, I've been asked more than once, so it's on my list.

Xboat No. 2 has just become generally available as PDF. No. 3 will probably be out in November or December.

No. 4 hasn't been finalized yet, so no dates there...

Almost bought this, then I saw it's for T5.

The contents of this 'zine are compatible with any ruleset. T5 elements are there, but do not dominate.

"Robots. Yes! Thanks to Traveller5, robots are first-class members of the Traveller game now."

T5 is not compatible with any prior version of Traveller and from the copy of the book that I got I'm pretty sure it's not compatible with a functioning human brain.

Nathan, T5 is easily compatible with Classic Traveller. The mechanic is just a roll over target number instead of under. The rules are wordy, but the system remains simple. The new rules are just jam-packed with treasures like optional sub routines that make the game more awesome and detailed...but they are optional. Give it a try. Don’t be intimidated by the fact that there are a lot of words but few pictures.

Nathan, I apologize. I mistyped something above. It should read “The mechanic is just a roll target number or under, instead of target number of more. Got’em flip-flopped. But it’s is still correct to state that T5 is easily compatible with Classic Traveller or Mongoose Traveller. You just add your skill to the target number and you get a very nuisanced task resolution system...or as simple as just that.

"Don’t be intimidated by the fact that there are a lot of words but few pictures." That's a great way to win someone over. Anyone who's tried to read that nearly 700 page monstrosity of a rule book will probably agree that it's not nearly as simple as you are implying. Hell, the 5.09 update to the book added 100 pages to try and correct the issues and that wasn't even the full errata. In fact to get the full errata out he ran a 2nd kickstarter and broke the book into three books bring the total to nearly 900 pages leaving the original backers with physical books that are effectively useless. His response, it's just another 100+ bucks to get the corrected version (which I've heard has significant errata issues as well).

So no I've got nothing against the word count or lack of art. I've got an issue with the way T5 was handled by the creator and refuse to support anything that supports it.

To each their own. I was an original T5 backer and would still rather play T5 than Mongoose (or earlier versions of Traveller).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
