100 Books to Find on a Pugmire Bookshelf

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Books can be a valuable source of clues and information, and therefore can be useful in an adventure. Some are valuable as items of treasure on their own right. Not every book encountered has this type of value or worth, though. Some of those books found may be factually wrong, contain misinformation or simply be of limited use or irrelevant.

This is a collection of 100 different low-value books that could be found in the Pugmire setting. These can be used to flesh out a bookshelf, whether it be at the Royal Library or simply a collection of books belonging to a noble. All the books have been written by dogs; there aren't any works of Man in the list. In a fantasy setting, even a generally useless book will usually be worth a small amount of money, as books in general can be uncommon. Whether a book has any in-game value or use is up to the Guide.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Monuments of the Old Ones by Charles Pointer (Descriptions, often second- or thirdhand, of enigmatic structures in lands beyond Pugmire and the Monarchies that are believed to be the constructions of Man)
  • Mutt Town: How it Came to Be by Esmeralda Mutt (A brief history of the founding and rise of Mutt Town; the author has a rather biased point of view towards the place)
  • My Life in the Pioneers by Toby Dachshund (A slightly tweaked to be more exciting memoir of the author’s experiences in the Royal Pioneers)
  • Myths and Legends of the Fearful Forest by Darcy Whippet (A collection of stories and fables about the Fearful Forest and things encountered in it; the author largely dismisses them all as tales from the superstitious and credulous)
  • Noble Families of Pugmire: A Guide by Jeremy Chow (Histories of the various noble families of dogs, both past and present)

Two pages are the front and rear covers and three pages are the Open Game License and credits.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
