Dragon+: The Barber of Silverymoon (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

People have been disappearing at night in the city of Silverymoon.

Some vanish entirely, leaving behind whispered rumors of fiends or other evil creatures having spirited them away. Others return strangely altered, with their memories of having been kidnapped wiped clean and their minds strangely dulled—and always with remarkable haircuts.

An adventure for characters of 4th to 6th level, originally appearing in Dragon+.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

I've seen clips floating around showing the cartoon "map" without the spots plastered all over it. Does anybody know how to find it / have a source for it?

I ran this in my homebrew campaign as a fun mission. I had 3 level 5 PCs (all good/neutral aligned, bard, monk, paladin). My party and I greatly enjoyed it. But a few small recommendations for other DMs who run this:
If you have an easily distractible party, make sure you have lots of gossip and townspeople ready if you're going to give them time to investigate beforehand. My group wanted to talk to basically the whole town and refused to thoroughly investigate the barber shop until they did. I think they spent just as much time in town as they did under the shop. But that's their brand of fun and they enjoyed it :)
If you want the barber to use the fun stuff under the shop after capturing a party member/NPC while the rest of the party is near, maybe come up with a better roadblock than just the trap door and some xvarts. My monk/paladin breezed through them and the barber didn't get to do much before they busted downstairs and started walloping him.
DON'T let the party clone themselves using...See more

Fun as this looks, there's a minor error I noticed.

One of which is the Prismatic Coloring Machine has options that grant spell abilities to a character, but do not provide any information as to what the spellcasting ability, spell attack modifier, or spell save DC would be for using them.

Unless of course, I just missed it being mentioned somewhere else.

A nod to the great tradition of silly April edition of Dragon Magazine adventures, the basis for it being set in the Realms is non-existent. Unless of course, you think "Silverymoon" and "Seville" are so close language-wise that you couldn't pass up the opportunity to set the adventure there. An insight into what WotC passes as "official" content in this day and age.

Well I dm'd this campaign as a one shot and it was very fun. I had my characters start at level 5, they quickly tailored characters to combat advantage and interesting quick backstories, however they went off the rails very soon as they were all evil. attacked the few townsfolk that would talk to them about the barber i had to do something to put them into check as they saw the snail and instantly decided to kill it due to its size and apparent value to its owner. I had banderhobb come out early to try and defend the snail (As its the investment of the darklings he works for) cause they were killing everyone in the city, the party over came him wayy to easily. id spawn 2 next time forsure and maybe some trash mobs. they attacked and killed mops whos impling did little to defend her vs my party. they then burned down the barber shop and walked NORTH dispite me putting them in nearly the farthest north city in faerun.

Dont underestimate a party of idiots who go off the rails, silverymoon was beautiful...See more

I'll be running this tomorrow, I look forward to it. There is definitely some twisted humor in there, but I am questioning the length of the adventure time wise, and many of the fun traps almost seem very hard for the party to get into. Any decently smart player will avoid a good bit of the stuff around the place, which - from what I can tell - turns this into a gauntlet against a whole bunch of Xvarts with little more to it.

I'll review this after I run it, and see how things go.

My group is going on 5 hours with the Boss Battle and the wrap-up left. Speeding it up to a 4-hour session probably can be done by dropping hints quicker or starting at the Barber Shop front door and assuming the party already did the investigative work away from the table. My people took a good hour of investigating just to get to the Barber Shop.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
