The Treasure of Magister Yama

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A Scarred Lands Adventure for 4-6 players of APL 3-5

The characters’ pursuit of Maghiel the Shunned leads them to an abandoned temple in the shadow of the Kelder Mountains, far from civilization. There, they discover that the mad necromancer has activated a Slarecian relic whose magic has the potential to warp everything around it – and its effects are spreading. Shutting it down will require the use of a device the temple’s last priest left behind – but it’s hidden in a treasure stash that won’t be easy to obtain.

Wow this adventure set the bar high for the rest of the adventures to follow! My group LOVED it! I was blown away at the amount of detail put into it. Has the designer published anything else? I'd very much be interested in more content from Dan!

Great adventure. Took my group two evenings to complete. I have a few comments and questions but as usual, they might contain a few spoilers for players. I really wish drivethrurpg had a way to conceal text with spoilers like most regular forums.

Is is correct that the key found in the Bridged City actually has no use in this adventure? It felt like a glorified prop which was staged as significant but in actuality was quite unimportant.

We were puzzled by the presence of the vile books in the library of Chern. Apparently, most books were taken to the Bridged City, some of them just to be under surveillance, but these extraordinary vile volumes were left behind seemingly without a plausible reason. We otherwise really liked the mechanics of the books and they were the catalyst for a few enjoyable roleplaying moments.

The amount of magic items to be obtained in this adventure is rather significant for such a low level adventure. However, the level of magic in a game is a matter...See more

Jakob,

As always, I am glad to see your feedback. To address a few of your points:

Regarding the key: be patient. It'll eventually come in pretty handy.

I believe (without pouring back over the text as I am answering from my phone at Gen Con) the tomes that were left behind were left with the intent of keeping them hidden.

Magic items are definitely more common on Scarn than most standard 5e settings. The titanswar was less than two centuries ago and the Gods still play a fairly active role in the world. Magic is everywhere in Ghelspad. This story in particular offers a bit more magic items than most, owing to the fact that the central antagonist is on something of a hunt for magical resources. I hope that clarifies the reason for and frequency of magic items throughout the campaign.

The emissary is a bit of Deus Ex machina (literally, as it is a divine being accessed by a machine.) Its best used as a safety net in case players get lost.

Hi Jakob! So glad you and your group enjoyed this. To add to Travis's comments:

The REAL reason the books in the library of Chern are there is "because it's thematically appropriate to unearth horrible hidden things in an adventure like this." :) But consider: The caretakers of the temple were a line of scholar-priests who may well have had more curiosity than sense (it's likely Yama and his predilictions didn't come out of nowhere) who also would have been concerned, in the immediate wake of the Divine War, that the titan cult hadn't been completely eradicated in the area (which they were right and it wasn't). They had some motive to look at a handful of tomes and say "Maaaaaaybe we should just keep these here. For reference. Just in case. And, you know, scholarly purposes. In the basement, where no one needs to know." And that's before factoring the quiet influence of the Sidereon and its vast curiosity detached from any sense of human-scale morality or consequence.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
