Color Coded - Auto Calculating - Character Sheet for 5e Dungeons and Dragons

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $1.00

I’m excited to bring you Project Gnome 3.12 of my a color coded character sheet for 5e Dungeons and Dragons. It is both form fillable and auto calculating. Put in your level and your ability scores and then watch your skills and abilities auto-populate.

The sheet is redesigned with a crisper look, the removal of some seldom used columns, and then using the repurposed space to add in more information. For the first time, I offer space and levels for multi-class characters. Also, now at your fingertips are languages, tools, weapons, and armor proficiencies. More space for magic items, a streamlined section for active and passive abilities, and of course, the color coding is still there.

In addition to the new changes above, you still have the additional drop down boxes for SRD class, race, and alignments. Encumbrance is auto-calculated as you enter numbers in the lbs. boxes. The calculation is based on the Encumbrance Variant on page 176 of the PHB. This allows you to use an oft ignored mechanic due it’s immersion breaking of calculating weight. Now the calculation is done for you. Still not interested in tracking encumbrance, it is easy to ignore and will not impede using the sheet.  Most of the character fluff is removed and is designed so you can have your skills and abilities at your fingertips.

The character sheet was created for my wife, so she could use her laptop quickly during play. The color coding was designed to help an eleven year old child in our group more easily recognize the skills used during our game, and both proved to be a big hit with the local players in my area and my play testers.

By removing character ideals and bonds from the first page, I was able to focus on what is really needed for quick access. to your mechanics, which you will be using long after your memorized your character's backstory and faults.

I believe the majority of people will be able to use the character sheet without issue, auto calculating and then printing are just a few clicks away, but those using digital devices will see an even greater case of versatility as you can auto-update on the fly.

I hope you enjoy, and as always, if there is anything I can do to improve, please leave constructive criticism in the comments and I will be happy to answer and help.

The file has been fully tested in Adobe DC and Pro, as well as Foxit Phantom and Foxit Reader.

No. You put in your attribute points and it calculates the rest. I’m not allowed to upload anything that has race stats built in. Anything they believe will make the purchase of the PHB or DMG unnecessary, such as building in the race attributes, is banned. This is why you have to put in your attribute points and not just have a drop down list that automatically fills in race abilities. The attributes are allowed, as is all the math for the D20 system, which is what my character sheet covers.

Thank you, I’m glad it is working well for you. This was my first attempt using Java, and nearing the final version I ended up with a serious issue with both my eyes and I was out for nearly six months before I could even look at a monitor.

I’m better, at least to the point we stopped my eye issues getting worse, and I would love to go back and try to optimize the code or add new features.

However, I can’t make any promises that I will be able to give an updated version will happen nor promise a timeline if I’m able to. However, I am still committed to crushing any bugs that may come up.

If I can finish a new sheet, everyone who has purchased this copy will receive every update for free, for life.

This is a really helpful tool! Especially for beginners.

One question/suggestion:
Is there somewhere specifically feats need to go? As an example, my druid has observant as a feat and I cannot manually change her passive perception or input feats so that it would change itself, is there a way to manage that?

Lots of feats directly change stats like that making auto fill with no feat input or manual option feel frustrating for some.

Thank You,
Brandi

I'm glad you are finding the character sheet helpful.

Stat changing feats and other specific options are a sticky situation because I have to navigate what Wizards considers open source and what is not. If I get too deep into specifics on the sheet then I can get it pulled. I have a much more detailed auto-fill/auto-calc sheet that I programmed that I and my group uses, but it has been denied for posting due to it infringing on Wizard's copywrite. I wish I could post it, but I understand and respect their position, it is also not beginner friendly. I can, however, look into creating a generic misc. box that will specifically allow you to adjust passive perception and possibly other stats. I don't think that would interfere with anything as long as I can keep it generic enough.

I actually started working on a two page version 4 sheet back in October 2020, but I had an autoimmune disease attack in November of that year that almost left me blind, and I've since dropped all development of...See more

Dumb question but will this sheet work on Mac? Thanks (or iPad?) Seems like it should if it’s PDF based but wanted to ask first. Also, starting my entire family or at once (with 2- 11 year olds and my wife), will I need to download 4 different sheets? I have no problem contributing $ but just wanted to know first so I can checkout only once. Also, would running this sheet multiple times for multiple players track HP in a battle or are there other programs that would be better suited to this?

Thanks,
Cory

That is not a dumb question at all. To be honest, I've never tried using it on a Mac, but as long as you are using Adobe or Foxit (probably many other .pdf viewers as well but those are the two I've tested and programmed on) I do not see any issues. You can also download the sheet for free to try it out first, just in case.

You only have to 'contribute' once, but I set it up as a pay as you want, which means you can pay one time and then download it as many times as you desire. There is no limit to how many times you can download or use the file.

As far as your final question, I guess that would depend on how many devices (PC's) you are using. I see that you want to play with your family, but I'm not sure if you will be putting in the stats once, let it auto-calculate, and then print and manually track current HP, or if each person will have their own, say laptop, and will update the calculations during actual gameplay. I've seen it used both ways.

I hope that helps, but...See more

Would it be possible to get a copy where 1) bardic jack of all trades could be added to skill calculations and 2) stealth was spelled correctly?

I can’t believe I misspelled Stealth and didn’t notice it until you just pointed it out. Quite embarrassing. That will be quick to fix and I should have that corrected and uploaded within the next 24 hours.

I can look into programming Jack of all Trades, but admittedly that would not be a quick edit and I couldn’t give a timeframe for when/if I would be able to get it done. I will give it a shot though.

Just bought this. I tried it and it worked just fine after downloading, now that it is saved on my computer it won't calculate at all and I can't physically enter in the data in the boxes it is supposed to calculate in. It defaults with a 0 in the AC box and nothing happens when I input the stats. Help please. If I open it from the purchased link it works fine.

Let's see if we can fix it. What pdf reader are you using? Which version of the character sheet did you get (color coded, no resize, or Print Only)? Can you try downloading another copy and see if the new copy works, or if it too works once and then stops. I will troubleshoot until we get it working for you.

I managed to download it again that day and it worked straight from the download and totally forgot to check your comment. I downloaded the Project_Gnome_Color_Coded_Sheet_v3.0 (1).pdf I went in and downloaded it again this morning and whatever was happening before seems to have stopped and appears to be working fine.

I found the problem. For some reason, Adobe is no longer recognizing its own text auto resizing option, despite all the other programs doing just fine with it. Figures. Anyway, I can fix that for you by manually changing all the auto-resize fields to a set number and I will post an updated version (3.1) as soon as I can.

Just trying to narrow things down so I can fix them for you. Is the text for the active/passive skills at least bigger than before, but just still too small?

Did the background field auto-size before to an acceptable level, but no longer does so?

I might increase font size again and just make it scroll, rather than autosize. Let me know and I can fix it for you.

I really liked it the only issue I was having was the carry weight wasnt adding upto the phb weight I was supposed to have for d&d and if there was a completely blanked out version that could be printed with no 0 in any of the boxes that would be awesome aswell.

Most likely the culprit to the carry weight is it is based on the Encumbrance variant on page 176 of the PHB. I'm working on a few tweaks right now and will work on adding a checkbox that will allow you to choose between the standard or variant for carry weight. I will put that near the top of my todo list. Until then, I did upload a completely blanked out version that you can print without any numbers like you asked. I hope that helps.

Can you tell me which version you downloaded and what specific numbers are not calculating? I will see what I can do to help troubleshoot any issues you have. The best place to start is to first put in your level and see what happens. At least then we can determine whether the problem is a specific number not calculating or the entire sheet.

Also, which .pdf viewer are you using?

Microsoft Edge is an internet browser, not a pdf program, even if it can view a pdf file. You would need to use something like Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader (both free) to fully use the character sheet. Also make sure you download the non-print version.

I like the character sheets, and my players found them useful. Only real issue we had with them was the placement of the stat vs bonus. Not having the option to place the stat value in the large box, and instead having the bonus there "feels icky". We all prefer to have the bonuses in the smaller boxes and the actual stats in the larger boxes, even if "the bonus is what's used the most". Also, the character notes section on Gnome v20 only allows a single line of text that is infinitely scrolling. Otherwise, you're doing a great job with this!

Will fix the single line of text and upload 2.1 as soon as that is done. I won't send an email blast because I should be able to get it done tonight and don't want to spam everyone with each little update. I can easily switch the "icky" part for you. 50/50 toss up on where people like those stats and I had to pick one or the other. I'll think of something and make it work for you. Thanks for the compliment though, I will keep working on it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
