Into the Dark

ADD TO WISHLIST >

THE WORLD IS COVERED IN MURK...
It is more than just darkness. It is a miasma that hates the light, devours flame, and warps the living. Somewhere, in that hungry dark is a Nightwell, and near it a Shade—a creature born of the Murk itself, and not just twisted like the beasts that it creates. Your lands are threatened, and someone must bear the Silver Flame to the Nightwell to close it. If you’re lucky, you might make it back with treasures from the world before the Murk. If you’re careful you might just survive your expedition into the dark.

Into the Dark is a game about delvers who brave a strange and alien darkness-covered environment to protect their homes, and in the process hope to recover valuables and find information on the world that existed before the dark.

This game focuses on using wits to overcome obstacles, life and death struggles, and exploration of unfamiliar and dangerous enviornements. It mixes familiar dungeon-delving fantasy themes with a post-apocaliptic horror-tinged world.

Included are:

  • Four Unique Delver Types. Detailed within are the well-armed Murkhunter, the quick-witted Explorer, the Murk-touched Shadowbinder, and the Silver Flame attuning Lightbearer. Each comes with unique powers, gear, and advancement rules suited to their role.
  • Adventure Generation. Tables and instructions to help you build your own expeditions into the murk, as well as five included murkwells (and spooky attendant monsters) to let you jump immediately into the game.
  • Streamlined Forged in the Dark System. A super-minimized, complete system that emphasizes player decisions, non-binary successes, and is geared for adventuring and delving into the dark.

Intended for single sessions or short campaigns.
3-5 Players (including GM)
2-4 Hours per session
Low Prep. Medium Complexity.

Is there any possibility of having some guidelines regarding the functioning of the "Conjuration" Ability belonging to the Shadowbinder?
In my opinion it is unclear and left too much in the hands of the players.

Any chance of a discount? I've had my eye on this and it is GM's Day!

$15.00 for a 44-page PDF of derived material with a word count, at a guess, of no more than 7,000. Giant font, full-page illustrations of a work based off of someone else's game. Who are you trying to kid with a price like that?

Have to agree with this assessment here. This literally looks like just the position and effect system plopped together with four playbooks and some tables. Not really enough to be a full priced game.

If you are going to build the bulk of your game off a already established system and expect full price, it should be at least at the level that these guys did on Band of Blades where something substantial was actually added to the system. This just seems like a but too low of an effort.

I think it's a great deal. Into the Dark is a bit too short for us to publish, but from having worked with Off Guard Games on both Scum and Villainy and Band of Blades (not to mention playtesting Atlas Reckoning which is also amazing) I know they pour hundreds of hours into making amazing games. The fact that they could condense a full game into 44 pages is incredibly impressive. I'm reading through it now and I can tell you, there's good stuff in there!

Side note: I playtested Throne of the Void when it was probably 15 or 20 pages, and I would have happily paid $15 for that game just as it was. It was one of the very few times that I ENJOYED having secrets at the table.

Are you serious? It takes significantly more effort to remove and streamline things than it does to bloat it with verbiage.

To quote The Bard, "Brevity is the soul of wit".

And this isn't THAT brief. It's eminently hackable, and from what I have heard, it was explicitly designed with this in mind.

Yeah, pagecount is by far the least accurate way to gauge the value of a game, but many folks cleave to it because it's an easily regarded simplification however inaccurate it is.

But apparently fixating on the first six words of a 50-word comment is totally accurate and not an "easily regarded simplification", whatever that may be.

Maybe if you explained what you mean by "derivative stats" in this case?...
But the answer is probably: No. There are a few Attributes, Actions, and stats that are all independant one from each other.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

A derivative stat is like in DND, where you have a Strength of 20 (the primary stat), but that 20 gives a 2nd stat that players actually use in a roll. In this case, a +5 (the secondary stat).

Off the top of my head, I can think of two systems that don't have derivative stats: Barbarians of Lemuria and ICRPG. In both of those systems the stat that a player has in an attribute is also the modifier for the roll. So if a player has a strength of 2, they also roll +2 on the dice. No secondary stats.

Since you purchased it, could you tell me if this system has derivative stats, now that I clarified?

That's what I thought.
So, no, absolutely no derivative stats.

I can think of more games that don't have derivative stats than games that do, tho. There's a lot of variety out there.

The preview does not show any system mechanics, just flavor fluff. Could you kindly expand the preview or give some sense of the rules of the game? Thank you.

It's a forged in the dark game. So it's doing the die-pool-but-take-highest thing this family of games is known for. Typically you'll be rolling anywhere between 1-4d6 and taking the highest result of the bunch (1-3 is bad, 4-5 is partial, 6 is good, 6,6,+ is a crit). There's a stress mechanic and resistance roll mechanic that players will be managing too -- once again -- just like this family of games is known for.

There IS a big difference with other Forged in the Dark games, and with the other PbtA-derived systems. The GM can decide to add or substract one or two dice from the player's dice pool according to various fictional circonstances, which, in effect, has an impact on the probability of success and thus reintroduces the notion of "difficulty level" which was absent from PbtA/FitD games(or differently treated).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
