MechWarrior: Destiny

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The year is 3025. War rages across the vast interstellar empires of the Inner Sphere as the militaries of the Successor States vie for dominance across more than a thousand light years of inhabited worlds. And the king among these battlefields: towering BattleMechs and the MechWarriors who pilot them. But behind each battle lie a thousand unseen strings: Machiavellian court intrigues, shadowy wars of intelligence and counterintelligence, secret organizations, corporate greed, and more.

Will you align yourself with the honor-bound samurai culture of House Kurita, become a crusader for freedom in the service of House Davion, or test your mettle as a House Steiner champion in the arena duels of Solaris VII? Or perhaps you will rain down fire from the skies in a House Marik aerospace fighter, or operate in the shadows as a House Liao intelligence agent. Will you pursue a life of service behind the veil of the secretive ComStar, join an elite mercenary outfit like Wolf’s Dragoons, or even choose to lead your own lawless band of pirates? The path you lead through the 31st century, and the legacy you leave behind, is all up to you.

MechWarrior: Destiny is a new way to dive into the action-packed BattleTech universe. Based on the easy-to-learn Cue System, MechWarrior: Destiny is a narrative-focused role-playing experience that has all you need to grab some equipment, load your sidearm, and strap into a ’Mech, aerospace fighter, or tank to fight for what you believe in, be it honor, glory, or even the almighty C-Bill. Loads of characters, ’Mechs, and other military hardware make it easy to start trading fire on 31st-century battlefields in no time. MechWarrior: Destiny also includes rules for incorporating play in BattleTech’s Total Warfare and Alpha Strike games.

I know that this has rules for use with The Game of Armored Combat / Alpha Strike, but does it have rules and prices for personal armor / on foot vs mech and vehicle combat / guns / vehicles / basic goods (food, clothing, ect.) / custom gear? How does this differ from A Time of War; is it better? And more importantly unlike A Time of War will this have expansions?

For anybody new to BattleTech, headsup: they've donned the skinsuit. Save your money, find an earlier edition with a timeline up to 3067 and beyond.

I did the kickstarter and got the Beta, how is this edition different? Is it worth getting?

Are there any guidelines for converting tabletop 'mechs to MW:Destiny stats?

I got the beta for this game as part of the Kickstarter. The game is good. It gets that feel of Battletech without getting bogged down in too many mechanics. While there's a GM, narrative control shifts around the table. I've run the game at multiple cons so far, and it runs really well. If you like Battletech, but want fast paced RPG that doesn't drag itself down with too many systems, then it's the game for you. If you want crunchy classic Battletech, then it might not be your thing. My only complaint about the system is the fact that the Tags and Cues don't really have any mechanical effect. They're just there as guides for the player rather than being utilized like aspects from FATE.

I live in Europe and getting a hard copy is tough, but I enjoy it enough get it special ordered from the U.S.. I'll be buying the PDF at some point.

I have no experience with the Cue System, but would it hurt the overall mechanics to hack some small bonuses/penalty into the cues and tags? Like some +1/-1?
It's certainly possible with the tags in pbtA, and the number ranges here are even wider if i remember correctly.

Since my last comment, i bought it, read it, made a cheatsheet and am really surprised how much i like it.
Apart from the a little bit chaotic presentation of rules, i really like how this is a really nice mash of fast/narrative and traditional/tactical.
Lots of vehicles/mechs and an extensive conversion guide for more.
Support for two timelines. No need to include the narration-spotlight mechanics. Even the editing seems ok.

What i would like to see: A supplement on spacecraft, especially Dropships and how to upgrade them.

No time for a proper review, but i would give it a solid 4.5/5.

Thank you Patrick.
I'm thinking of getting a hardcopy myself.
Supplements would be very welcome indeed.

So do I need Battletech books to use Mechs in this game? I've enjoyed classic BTech but if I'm going to need a bunch of books just to run the game my players aren't interested.

Destiny is the latest version of the Mechwarrior role playing game set in the Battletech universe - if you and your players are only interested in the tradional wargame side of Battletech then you have no need of this or any of the other Mechwarrior books that will follow (although they do sometimes have interesting setting lore and information that may not appear elsewhere, if that appeals to you).

No; it has relatively abstract, no-miniature-required combat rules.

Why is that Mechwarrior on the cover firing their PPCs inside the minimum range? Their heat is going through the roof too! Should be using SRMs and MLs and moving to melee the Rifleman's soft back armor. What a rookie.

You are right. I didn't look much closer at the cover then note it was similar to the 1st edition Mechwarrior cover.

I know someone's going to pick this up just because it says Battletech/Mechwarrior and to that individual I have a question. Is this one of those systems where you don't have a GM but each player takes a turn acting as a GM?

Sort of. There's a GM but narrative control shifts and is effected by spending plot points.

It runs fun as a standard GM game, but it does allow players to inject narrative through plot points. I tend to not do the rotating narrative control.

The narrative control elements are not integral to the game.

You can easily run this as a traditional rpg. It has rules for both narrative and standard play in the book. I prefer the one GM and group of player/traditional method and it works great.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
