Witch & Knave

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Witch and Knave is an OSR inspired solo dungeon crawling roleplaying game. It has a light sketch of a setting that implies extreme human injustice to themselves and others while facing an unknowable, alien demonic infestation of the world. You play a Knave or a Knave with magic (called a witch), that has been cast out of society for not conforming. You are forced to face the demons in the wilds and to explore the forgetten places in order to survive.  Sometimes, you are forced to be the hero the world needs.

Witch and Knave strives to be a solo game that drifts away from the common yes/no answer oracle by implementing a scale that rises and falls with each roll of the dice. This scale gives you the ability to control the narrative while also experiencing moments of surprise.  The game however works with just about every solo game oracle you have (including a yes/no oracle), and with a small conversion, just about every fantasy game you have.

Witch and Knave provides guidlines for exploration with random encounters as well as unique demon generation.

Witch and Knave was originally based on Knave by Ben Milton.

Like all games that Things I Keep releases, Witch and Knave is a work in progress. The more people who purchase and enjoy this product the more I'll be able to devote time to supporting and expanding it.

It's good that the book has many tables. But without bookmarks it becomes difficult to find the table you need. A pdf with only the generators and tables would really help

Do you map your explorations at all or is it all theater of the mind? If you do have mapping/gridding, is it a necessary part of gameplay?

You can play it either way. You can abstract dungeon and wild encounters to be 'the encounter area where I ran into the wolf demon' and not worry about where exactly it is on a map. You can always decide to go back to that location or end up back there because of story shifting Doom you have suffered. The game encourages map making because I enjoy making maps but they are not needed. It would be just as easy to run a dungeon like how Burgs work in the game. You discover locations and know where they are at after you discover them. You don't need a map or to know exactly where they are in the town unless you want to. Knowing that you discovered the apothecary you needed hidden in a back alley is more than enough.

If you like map making, how you map is up to you. I often generate a random map either as I play, room by room, or use one already generated from various websites. The book touches on those methods and a dice drop method.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
