Welcome to Choi Labs

Built by Dyson Phytology, hidden at the edge of explored space, and squirreled away at the bottom of an alien ocean, this clandestine research facility has recently discovered a marvelous ocean-floor moss with far-reaching potential. Subterfuge and breached quarantine quickly result in catastrophe. The infectious moss consumes both the facility and the staff that studied it, leaving only monstrous life in its wake.

Unaware of this disaster, an envious rival department turns to the black market to hire a team of hapless mercenaries, tasking them to infiltrate the labs and steal coveted samples of this would-be miracle moss. Upon arival, the team is greeted by empty hallways, corpses, and dire implications. Worse, they may already be infected by the nightmarish moss that haunts the hallways.

BLOOM is a short adventure of horrific infection. The risk of exposure is constant and subtle, the side effects ghastly and likely terminal.

Hi! Sorry for the late reply! Nope, but the changes are minimal enough that it still runs perfectly fine - just up monster damage by 1d10 when running it in 0e!

I just finished playing through this scenario. It took us about 3 sessions, including character creation. I didn't see the module itself because I was on the player side but I had a lot of fun. Lots of unsettling body horror and tension building moments. The adventure ended with my character, Professor Danica Harlan (Scientist), mutating into a giant crab creature and attacking my own party. It was AWESOME.

Review It From Orbit: By Any Other Name

Remember that sci-fi horror movie, the one where the crew found an abandoned station that infected all of them and things went to XXX? Heck, that's practically a genre unto itself with the number of films that might be named from that short description.

I get to be less negative this time around, and that may cause me to babble at parts because this is some good stuff.

I'm going to end up potentially spoiling parts of the adventure for possible players, so be forewarned.

The elevator pitch from the designer is: "At a dark corner of colonised space, a secretive research lab has discovered something miraculous. Something horrifying. Something voracious."

We're not covering any new ground here - like I said, chances are, you've seen some variety of this movie before. I'm not going to hold any lack of originality against this, because it does a fantastic job pf presenting how to put the PCs into some...See more really bad spots, which would definitely ratchet up the tension on the players.

This is just about everything I might want for a sci-fi horror scenario. The product is 20 pages, and the only "wasted" page is the cover; the rest is all usable content (even the credits page doubles as a map for the facility).

Here's the brief intro to set everything up for the GM: "An underwater research facility has suffered a disastrous outbreak of an infectious mold that aggressively consumed and rebuilt the organic mass of those it infected. There were no survivors. None outside the facility know of the disaster, and the players have been hired by a shadow client to break in and steal information and samples relating to the experiments the facility was conducting."

Basically it boils down to the Bloom infecting everything in the labs, and that will likely end up including the players when they start poking around. There are Bloom creatures present, but by and large they aren't really the threat - they're just there to be weird and freaky, and not even necessarily hostile.

This module is less about jump scares than a building dread that the party is wholly screwed, and what they might end up doing about that. It's not set up like a dungeon - it's set up like an underwater research facility. The grouping of the lab spaces makes sense. It makes sense that the PCs would be able to figure out ways around things.

I love that there's succinct explanation aplenty here.
Why are the PCs are there in the first place? A rival department of the company doing the research wants samples; this explains how they (the department) can provide the PCs with maps and security codes to get around the lab.
What happened in the lab? Explained.
What sorts of stuff has been altered by the Bloom? Examples, and how each might interact with both PCs as well as other parts of the infection.
How does the infection impact the PCs? Timelines, results based on which portion of the PC was initially infected (along with a table to randomize if need be), and how that might be communicated to the players all present.

The actual "adventure" portion of the adventure is laid out as the PCs might be most likely to interact with each portion of the company outpost, with notes on what to do if they decide to skip portions.

Heck, there are even example "cinematic cutscenes" provided at the end (for both success and failure possibilities).

I think my only real issue with this would be trying to make use of it in an ongoing campaign; it's noted that this is intended as a one-shot owing to the high lethality of the module, but there are some suggestions as to how to minimize some of the threat.

*Would I GM this?* As a one-shot, absolutely. For an ongoing campaign I would definitely look into the tweaks provided, but as long as the players know what sorts of gaming they might be in for (including probable PC death), it would also be a blast.
