The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen, third edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Baron Munchausen's tales of his extraordinary adventures are legendary: riding cannonballs through the sky, sailing to the Moon, meeting gods, escaping from the Turkish army on half a horse, and many more.

Can you outdo the Baron's storytelling? You can try!

Challenge your friends to tell the most extraordinary stories, interrupt to challenge or correct their boasts, and describe your own amazing exploits in this renowned game of wit, riposte and repartee, written in high style by the Baron himself. The role-playing system replaces dice and pencils with money and fine wines, and requires no previous experience with RPGs.

A modern classic, The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen was the first of the New Style games that ushered in the story-games revolution of the early 2000s. It requires no GM or preparation, plays in under an hour, and has over 200 ready-to-play adventures in the book. It's also really, really funny.

This third edition was originally published by Fantasy Flight in 2016. The content has been greatly expanded from the first and second editions. Contained beneath the sumptuous cover is the original game, along with Arabian-style rules from Sindbad the Sailor, a simpler version for younger (or inebriated) players, and rules for playing online. One of the Baron's own descendants has also contributed twelve new variants and different styles of play, including Gutenberg's Revenge, The Recall of Cthulhu, and Munchausen Crescent. Its pages are graced with glorious paintings from the hand of Omar 'Once Upon a Time' Rayyan.

"One of the most insanely fun roleplaying experiences I have ever had"  Wil Wheaton

"Utter brilliance in RPG form!"  John Kovalic, creator of Dork Tower

"Perhaps the finest game writing I have ever encountered. I delight in its every word" — Bill Coffin

"This game is a modern classic" — Tim Harford, the Undercover Economist

“Really, really, really funny” — Shut Up & Sit Down

Is this available in print somewhere? Some searching suggest this may not be the case, but wanted to confirm. And if it is available, where?

The only place to get physical copies at the moment is Indie Press Revolution, which is selling off the last copies of the Fantasy Flight edition of the game: https://www.indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/The-Extraordinary-Adventures-of-Baron-Munchausen-3e.html

Hi James--I've no idea why that's no longer in your library. It's the second edition of the game--it's not for sale any more but the files are still uploaded to the website and any previous purchaser should be able to download it. Can you take it up with DriveThru's tech people?

Yeah, double check that, I've got like 10,000 files in my library. They made the new extended library features because I couldn't access my assets anymore. HEY!!! Could you check and see if the filename is something weird, or misspelled?? It just occurred to me that if it's named something really bizarre, I might never find it. :/

Do you know.. it's been so long, I can't even recall why I needed THAT version. Was that version compatible with Pathfinder 1st Ed. or D&D 3.5 or..? I'm certain that there was a reason I needed that one, but I can't for the life of me remember why, or what my intentions were. I'm pretty sure I figured that I could bolt it on to some other campaign or system or something, but again, too much time has passed in between. :/

The artwork in the one available PDF is extremely low-resolution for some reason. Any chance of an upload with higher-res visuals?

So is this the same as the FFG third edition, or is there additional new material that wasn't included in the FFG third edition?

This was the Fantasy Flight edition, but ownership of it has returned from the colonies to its rightful home. Barring a couple of minor changes, the text is the same. I should probably mention that in the main description. (Future generations will read that and go 'But it is mentioned in the main description!', failing to grasp the simple wonder of time-travel that has been effected here.)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
