So... I have my original release box (and Castle Keitel) from way back when.
What's different, if anything, with the 2.5 version?

I already had the 1st edition box (loaned the revised book and didn't get it back). Should have got it signed last time I talked to Paul Kidd.

This is a very interesting small-group game. The learning curve can be a bit steep by 'modern' games, but the effort is well worth while. Having the PNG card deck makes playing it online much easier to arrange on sites such as Roll20. (Now to work on my character sheet creation skills...)

Lace & Steel is a great game, I played it a couple of times back in the 90s. The card rules for duelling and repartee are really cool, and sorcery also uses a unique card deck. IIRC there are "hotter in the north" bits of the setting, which coming from the northern hemisphere I found a bit strange, but the setting is very good to play in.

This game is completely adorable. From the artwork/illustration to the wonderful otherworldly romance of the setting. My gaming group are chomping at the bit to play Centaur swashbucklers. The mechanics are interestingly different and straightforward. Thanks for bringing this back!

How is this an OSR game? I don't think card based resolution existed until the early 2000s if then at all.

This one was from the '90s, even appearing in a forum article by Roger Moore in Dragon Magazine. It was one of the first to use cards but wasn't well known in North America because it was originally published in Australia; I've heard that most copies in NA were bought at Gen Con or from a couple Furry conventions (the major artist for the game was well known as a "furry" artist even though their work was mostly centaurs, satyrs, and harpy characters--go figure)

I stand corrected. I had to admit Roger Moore gave a very good review and I did enjoy the "Mus of Kerbridge" novel you wrote in the setting. I still have a copy of the old TSR paperback in my bookcase wedged in between Cook's "Dread Brass Shadows" and "Hoka! Hoka! Hoka!"

I don't know if you'll see this three years after the fact, but card-based resolution is older than you think. Castle Falkenstein (1994) used cards exclusively. So did the SAGA System used in Dragonlance 5th Age (1996) and the Marvel Super Heroes Adventure Game (1998), both published by TSR. The original version of Deadlands (1996) used a combination of cards and dice. I believe Everway (1995), written by Jonathan Tweet, used Tarot-like cards in a more freeform and subjective way. And those are just the more well-known examples.

On the other hand, this may the first time I've seen a game from the 90s described as "OSR".

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
