Superheroes Vs The Cthulhu Mythos

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This little diatribe gives rules for creating super heroes for use in a very different style of Call of Cthulhu. It is a mash-up between the Mythos and some of the crazies of a Gothamite’s Rogues Gallery. Almost all of the villains in that town, and not a few of the heroes, have some strange obsessions and fixations, not the least being that they can make a difference.

As in any Cthulhu game, many of those touched by the power are destined for an asylum but, given that they have real, though Mythos-sourced, powers, holding them is as problematic as it is in the comics.

Is this Call of Cthulhu 7e compatible/focused?

I have the Pulp Cthulhu hardcover as my primary GM text. I've been trying to find resources on this theme (Supes v. Mythos) for an existing, well-supported rules system. Several sources indicate work had been done with CoC 1-6e but not 7e.

Hi Eric, the templates are written for 7th Edition but could be applied to other editions without major revisions. I'd suggest looking through the preview in detail as that gives the background as well as two templates. Literally, players make a standard 7E character and then choose one of the templates to apply to that character. They just sort of lay on top of the standard character, providing additional abilities, including new attacks and defences. Try applying the two templates in the preview to a couple of 7E characters and see whether that works for you. There is nothing additional hidden in the full document that you do not see in the preview templates.
I hope that answers your question. :-)

For those who have bought this can you give an overview of its contents?

Hi, Of course, Angelo.
There was an old British comic story called Zenith about super heroes but where there were definite hints of the Mythos being behind everything. This supplement is a collection of super power TEMPLATES that can be applied to a standard character created under standard Call of Cthulhu rules. The idea is that you can play these superhero characters in any existing Call of Cthulhu scenario but actually fight most of the monsters and win (not the Gods, of course). It changes the tone from 'cannot win' to can win the small battles and maybe even some of the bigger ones.
It requires a GM to buy into the premise to make it work, of course, but should require little in the way of modification to existing scenarios, depending on the powers chosen.
I chose to buy full colour artwork which unfortunately pushed up the price for what is effectively just a small monologue.
I think it would deserve a longer work with write-ups for heroes and villains, backgrounds, etc. but that's...See more

Hello.

Thanks for the preview. This looks pretty cool, but $10 for 22 pages is a bit much for a digital product. Was this price meant to be for a physical copy?

Hi. The colour artwork cost me a lot so it's really the artwork that has driven the price. Superheroes are quite art dependant so I didn't think a text only version would sell. Sorry about that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
