THE DARK PEAKS: DEEP MAW CORE RULES

"Whether you’re looking for a one-shot or fast-combat and gritty campaign Dark Peaks is a perfect fit. " - Roll4.com
"It reeks of Darkest Dungeon in all the best of ways." - Aaron the Pedantic

THE DARK PEAKS: DEEP MAW is a dark melodramatic dungeon crawl, taking operatic action and high risk gameplay into the dark beneath the mountains.

Based on the feedback from the standalone adventure, THE FESTIVAL OF SWORDS, THE DARK PEAKS: DEEP MAW takes all the systems within that game and ramps them up to 11! Using a system of risk dice to drive a fate dice pool, players have to take heroic actions to build up their endurance of the night. Only taking these risks will restore your fate dice, and only those strands of fate stand between your characters and their grisly demise.

In the blood-soaked interior of the mountain, players must descend down through the enemies towards where the Dweller lays. Upon the way, they will battle horrors of the night, creatures of the deep, and their own fears and objectives.

This system includes:

- Level dice which increases the danger as the adventurers go deeper into the mountain.

- Simultanous actions in combat, so no-one is protected by the turn order and fights degenerate into chaotic melees.

- Unique Monsters to populate your dungeons, expressed in neatly arranged monster cards.

- Quick peasant generating characters, including motives and fears which will change your Character's play style.

- Games Masters guidance to creating dungeons and encounter to test your player's will and bravery!

Will you survive to tell your tale of victory? Battle within THE DARK PEAKS: DEEP MAW

to find out!

The Dark Peaks is a great game but not a game for everyone - we could start like this. It's not that sort of game you can do almost everything with, like a D&D for example. It was created with a specific kind of game in mind, and whether it is for you or not depends on what you generally like to play.
The Dark Peaks is what I could describe as a horror dungeon crawler; you start as an average person who decided to become an adventurer for their own reason - and what better time to begin your career than when unspeakable horror is about to emerge and destroy your country?
The thing it immediately reminded me of was Darkest Dungeon. I am a mega fan od Darkest Dungeon by the way. The setting is different, but the feeling and the experience are similar. You descend into a bottomless dungeon full of horrors, hopefully survive, return to the village to sell stuff, buy better gear, heal and so on - and then down into the abyss once again!
And general creepiness - that is always appreciated....See more

This book delivers on its premise. I playtested this and in every session my players have been stressed and scared. They enter the first combat and are immediately hit by how fragile they are. They start to plan and strategize the best ways to simply survive till the next encounter! They also plot how to manage their limited resources and gain back what they can.

This game has simultaneous combat rounds. That means the GM and all the players declare their actions and roll, and the actions happen SIMULTANEOUSLY, as narrated by the GM. This is to represent the chaotic swirl of combat and it can lead to players and monsters killing each other simultaneously!

It's refreshing to do things this way coming from D&D, in which initiative order sometimes feels superficial. As the GM I found it challenging to visualize and narrate things happening all at the same time because you have to consolidate all the rolls and actions and put them into a single scene. The result is rewarding and I think...See more

It reeks of Darkest Dungeon in all the best of ways. A formal review will be coming as soon as I can get a group together and give it some playtime (stay tuned for postings), but as it stands, I think this is definitely a game to keep an eye out for.

While it's not a direct D&D clone, I believe this works to its benefit, as the core of the system revolves around the concept of delving deeper and deeper into horrifying and deadly environments. The rules are light, the combat is chaotic, and by the end of the day you'll have some very dead peasants and you may have some bloodstained heroes with a laundry list of trauma.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
