The Sword Saint

Sword saints are warriors who walk the path already taken by another, looking to achieve such legendary skill that they, too, will be remembered by history. The true sword saints of the past were figures who achieved a level of skill beyond mastery in their craft. Though modern practitioners call themselves sword saints, this is only to draw a parallel between themselves and these heroes.

In practice, they would usually only call themselves warriors, fighters, samurai, or otherwise. It is unbecoming for them to address themselves as sword saints unless they are arrogant, but this does not always stop them. ‘Phantom saint’ is a term they commonly use, describing their emulation of an ancient swordmaster’s lifestyle, combat skills, and practices until they come truly into their own.

As a class the sword saint relies heavily on their resource, focus points, to perform a variety of techniques that help them to adapt to any situation. They rely on focus techniques, which each path of devotion features unique versions and variants of.

Paths of Devotion

This document contains three new subclasses for the Sword Saint, each based upon a historic figure. They are:

  • Way of Kojiro. A subclass for wielding two-handed and versatile weapons with one hand, focusing on defensive counterattacks.
  • Way of Muramasa. A blood-thirsty berserker who deals explosive critical damage, and exploits the existing wounds of their opponents.
  • Way of Pendragon. Using luck and their wits, this righteous knight-like subclass serves as a shining beacon of hope to their allies during combat.

(The Sword Saint class was made for the Nat19: Vestige of Ophiuchus D&d 5E stream on Twitch, streamed every Saturday at 1 PM PST on the Nat19Official channel. Come join us if you'd like to see it in action!)

Great subclasses, there is a typo in the Pendragon Subclass under the Light of Hope feature: there is a Capital B right next to Your --> BYour...
Just wanted to let you know.

The Muramasa character in my game has been quite intense, dpr wise, but within something approaching reason. (level 14)

And then we realized that he hadn't been adding his bloody critical necrotic damage. He actually approached me and went "Uh... I didn't notice this, it's definitely too much, right?" And I had to agree with him.

It's enough that he makes tons of attacks through dragon surge and bloodlust, he doesn't need bonus damage on criticals that he gets 3 times as often as everyone else >.>

I have generally enjoyed the class, but I've definitely gotta recommend a nerf there.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
