100 Hooks and Rumours to Hear in or about the Spinward Marches

ADD TO WISHLIST >

When asking around in the spaceport bar or anywhere else, Travellers may overhear rumours about events on other worlds. They may be insuring about a different matter entirely and stumble across additional information by accident. This supplement has 100 rumours that Travellers could hear. They can be used as misdirection, background information or as potential adventure hooks. The rumours in this supplement cover the Spinward Marches.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Marastan in the Glisten subsector of the Spinward Marches is an Imperial reserve world where plant and animal species collected by the Scout Service, some of which are now extinct in their original habitats, can be found. Access to the world at large is restricted to accredited academics, but there's a rumour that the restricted area is being visited by those looking to collect some of the extinct species for sale elsewhere.
  • McClellan Factors in the District 268 subsector of the Spinward Marches is known to be actively squeezing out any rivals. It has been accused of sailing very close to the wind with some of its tactics, and there are rumours that it may have even gone beyond that in some cases, though no-one has definitely managed to confirm this. Some have suggested this is because those who experienced the tactics didn't survive them.
  • Mithras in the Glisten subsector of the Spinward Marches is a Red Zoned world as it is an Imperial prison world. Some of those sent to Mithras are sent there for life; those serving finite sentences are housed away from them. There's a rumour that some of the lifers have recently managed to escape, though it isn't known how as the world itself is difficult to survive on outside the prison. There are suggestions that any prisoners who did escape had help from both within and without.
  • Mora in the subsector of that name in the Spinward Marches is one of the most heavily populated, and highest tech level, worlds in the region, exporting large amounts of goods to both the Spinward Marches and Deneb. It's rumoured that some of the companies based on Mora are using the wealth generated to gain control of companies on other, less wealthy worlds, with the intent of spreading their influence.
  • Palique Environmental Systems Products are known for the quality of their vacc suits, which have a renowned reputation for reliability and comfort. There are rumours, though, that some of the more recent lines of products have been flawed, with systems having a tendency to fail at inconvenient, and often dangerous, times, and there are many dangerous moments when wearing a vacc suit.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
