ASTRATERRA is a steam fantasy role-playing game for all ages and it mixes elements from fantasy, steampunk, and science-fiction genres.   

In Astraterra, you and your fellow explorers are tasked with mapping anew the forgotten corners of a shattered ringworld and taking care of the ancient fargates while surveying ancient ruins, encountering dangerous monsters, and discovering wondrous astratech.

The amazing world full of opportunities, together with an elegant and easy-to-learn d6 dice pool system, creates a role-playing experience suitable for role-players of all ages, both beginners and veterans.

The Explorer’s Guide contains:

  • All necessary instructions for creating and gearing up your own exploring hero 

  • Rules for playing steam fantasy adventures in the wondrous world of Astraterra.

  • Choose your explorer from the seven species of Astraterra: the reptilian Caven, the insectile Drux, the short and big-nosed Gnolf, the widespread Humans, the enchanting Solar, humanlike animatons the Synthroid, or the diverse group of creatures with both human and animal features known as the Chimera  

  • Pick a role most suitable for your hero - will you be a Daredevil, a Mancer, a Mechanic, a Scholar, a Shadow, a Starknight, or a Wanderer?

  • Gear up for your adventures with various tools, mechanical gadgets, chemical vials, medicinal potions, weapons, and even pets

  • Introduction to the world of Astraterra and to some of its animals and creatures like the tiny Pocket Dragon, the armored Crabulan, the dangerous Megabug, and the cute Wibblefloof

Besides a handful of regular six-sided dice, a pencil, and an eraser you need characters sheets to play.

Character sheets are included in this product, but they can be downloaded separately for free and there is also a pack of seven premade characters available here on DrivethruRPG.

Hi Neil,

Unfortunately, the GM book translation has been delayed and I want to publish the POD once both are ready as there can be translations or rules references that depend on The Explorer's Guide and vice versa.

Also, I've decided to take the opportunity to include some minor tweaks to the TEG while waiting for the translation to be completed. So, some updates to TEG are coming still.

we have some delay with the translation, but it's being worked on. I hope to have this published before summer and PODs for The Explorer's Guide and the Gate Master's Handbook soon after that.

I just bought the original Finnish version after I finally managed to locate one.

And I have to say that this is just the thing I needed!

After playing years with my children and their friends using the first edition rules, it is really refreshing to get more options for character creation and have more ways to develop them during the play. New rules and character skills make task resolution and general gaming fun, while they also allow more varied characters builds even inside same base class.

I really wish you guys get your hands on the Narrator's Handbook soon. It has, among lots of other things, nice history about how Astraterra was created and good beginner guide how to start your GM journey.

My seven and ten year olds approve =D

I purchased the English version of the Explorer's Guide and am really liking the whole package, system, setting, tone and steam fantasy. Great game. Will likely get the POD when it comes out.

I see from the answer to a question below that the Narrator's Handbook is being translated to English and is expected early next year. I was curious, if I were to purchase the Finnish version and use Google translate in the interim (I'd like to see the book now to be able to play), would I be able to get the English version when it releases without having to re-purchase it?

Hi, thank you for your feedback and I’m glad to hear you like the game :)

Unfortunately, the Finnish and English editions are different products. The English edition requiring additional translation and layout work, for example. So, I’m sorry to say, but I cannot compensate later for purchasing the Finnish GM handbook in advance.

However, we are working on some classic* adventures meanwhile waiting for the GM handbook to get finished. These will expand the setting a bit and introduce some new creatures and tech items.

* classic for the Finnish audience, I mean :)

I picked up the Narrator's Guide and am doing a basic translation using Google Translate for myself. I went back and was going to buy the adventures,
Mutkia Matkassa to do the same, but it seems to have been taken down (as has the narrator's guide). Was curious if the English versions are close, or if not, is there another source for the adventure module?

The Finnish Astraterra products along with other Finnish RPG products were removed from our DrivethruRPG catalogue for clarity. The 2nd edition products are still available on our own website, but all 1st edition products are being updated and not for sale at the moment.

Some English adventures will be available as soon as possible.

This looks interesting, with simple mechanics that allow for some customization and an interesting balance system that combines an advantage with a disadvantage. I also like the note about how it's not trying to be "historical Victorian Era plus fantasy", just using some of the cooler aspects of history to build an engaging fantasy world.

I browsed the preview yesterday (10/13) but when I showed it to someone else today he found the preview is currently unavailable.

Great looking book, sounds super fun from a skim. Bookmarks are partially Finnish though and seem to be a header level too "deep" in places.

This looks like a fun game but I've been burned before in purchasing a game translated into English from another language, and then none of the game was ever translated other than that core rulebook. Are you committed to releasing it all in English or is this one of those things where you later decide there wasn't enough interest in the game to complete the translation project and all the people who did buy it in English end up with an unsupported and incomplete game?

Thank you for your interest and I understand your worry. This is a complete rulebook that was published originally in Finnish in 2017. The English edition was supposed to come out a year ago already, but back then I was working two jobs. Last July I quit my day job and now I'm focusing full-time on RPG content production (cartography and game design).

The translation was made by Jukka Särkijärvi who has translated other RPGs to English before (Stalker RPG by Burger Games, for example). We are currently working on the translation of the GM handbook and expect that to be ready for release early next year.

We have more materials coming after that. For example, a world guidebook, an adventure collection, and a creature supplement. And these are more than just plans as these are products that are already being worked on.

Well, it is now a year later to the day and still nothing beyond the original book that I can see. I think my worry was justified. I don't say that with any pride. I was really thinking this game looked promising and I wanted to get into it.

Sounds quite interesting, but one thing I always like to do before spending money on a new game is to look at the character sheet. But I can't seem to find one anywhere for Astraterra. Can you please upload one somewhere? Extra points if you can include a pregen, so we can see what it looks like filled in... Thanks!

Oh, and I got the full-size preview working. That should give a better understanding of the game too.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
