What is a Combat Implant? And where do I find them? And if you tell me they are Cybernetic Augments I am going to be disappointed. The 75kcr per implant won't pay for most of the augments.

I got a question, on the page it says it's a watermarked PDF. I'm wondering, what are those watermarks like? Will it be annoying when reading the PDF?

Right at the bottom of each page, between the page number & the bottom of the page is the watermark. It reads " (Order # )" - It's discrete & you barely notice tbh. The background colour of the footer is light grey so that makes it even less obtrusive.

Disappointing to say the least that no discount is offered for those who purchased the first core book. In addition, the bookmarks problem is still not fixed. That is to say, the pdf is locked from adding your own bookmarks which is a major inconvenience. I don't see the purpose, personally. Surely you can still restrict extracting pages but allow owners of the pdf to add their own bookmarks. As it is, you need to navigate to the actual physical contents page (p2), and then do a "Go to page __" to get to the desired section, adding 1 to the number, as the pagination is out.
On top of that, Mongoose seem content to not answer any user questions on this page, which is borderline rude.
A real shame, as the system is pretty cool. However, contrast that with a lesser-known sci-fi system like Esper Genesis, easily Traveller's equal, but with excellent customer support on Drivethrurpg, a comprehensive free version of the core rules and non-locked pdfs!!!

Glad you got upgraded. Have to say the bookmark issue is still a royal pain though not a problem unique to Mongoose (Hi Traveller 5).

If you're intent on locking bookmarking for owners, at least have the common decency to bookmark the pdf adequately before you lock it - There is a bookmark for page 8 (the beginning of character creation) - the next bookmark is page 58 (Skills) - this makes rolling up characters far more difficult than it should be. You should bookmark all of the professions as well as all of the key tables in that area alone. Better still, allow owners to bookmark their purchase...

I come from classic LBBs, having not enough time to devote to MT and TNE and then losing track of later versions. I’ve seen mention of T4 and MgT 1, 2, and 2/2022 and I appreciate that this is a mongoose thread and all those comparisons with earlier versions are valid topics. Other “competitors” have been mentioned but I never see comparisons with T5. Is there a reason for that? How far apart are these on the Traveller family tree? Are they competitors, or compatible?

Mongoose Traveller 1st edition was designed directly from Classic Traveller rules (ignoring other editions) and Mongoose 2nd edition was an evolution from that. It is still compatible, or at least recognizable to the original rules and is still a 2D6 roll high system. It has more narration and options during character generation, and a more consistently adjudicated set of skills. Basically, it is an updated, more illustrated and modernized version of the classic game.

T5 was an expansion of Marc Miller’s T4 development which uses a roll under system, with dice pools based on difficulty levels. It also tends to include more tabular based generation systems for equipment (and everything else!). Mongoose Traveller 2nd edition tends to use catalogues more. It is a more complex system, and one for the purists. You could possibly make use of some of the maker tables, and some other included concepts (like genetics), but they are not fully compatible, no.

Most of the people I've talked to that own T5 and most reviewers kind of see it as a massive toolbox more than a coherent, easy to apprehend game. The lack of most examples of what the various makers produce (vehicles, ships, armour, weapons, systems, etc) tends to mean you haven't got much actual play-ready if you buy T5 until you have done a lot of work yourself.

I'm hoping for some insight. I'm looking to mix up my D&D gaming group with some sci-fi adventure. After much research, I've settled on Traveller; and I clearly want the latest edition, so the 2022 rulebook is the place to start. But considering it's longevity and many renditions over the years, there is a confusing array of products...it seems too many. It seems that the Central Supply Catalogue and the Field Catalogue should be one product...the same with the Vehicle book and the High Guard book.

Regardless, it seems that aside from the Core rules, I should also purchase the Companion as, correct me if I'm wrong, this is essentially the DMG of Traveller. Is that correct?

Is 2300AD just a campaign setting? What other books are must-haves?

The only book you *need* is the core rules, and these are enough for years of play because of the various generation tables provided which allows you to randomly design sectors, planets and encounters. The 2022 Updated core rules also includes basic ship and vehicle design along with an abbreviated equipment catalogue. It is complete, in and of itself.

The next 'core rule books’ are the Central Supply Catalogue (general equipment), High Guard (for spacecraft) and Vehicles (for non-spacecraft) which all expand on those various areas with more options and examples. The Traveller Companion also includes more rules options, like a variety of character generation alternatives, for example. It is more topically eclectic than the DMG, to be sure, but does include some useful ideas. If you like PC Robots, then there is another new rulebook for that. These are all the ‘core rules’ expansions that exist. The rest is setting stuff.

The Field Catalogue is a sourcebook designed for Mercenaries...See more

Thank you so much, Rory. You've gone above and beyond, good sir. I'll start out with the core book and probably the Pirates setting book; that sounds very interesting. I'll see if there's enough meat there to satisfy what I feel I should know. If I find a lack of variety, then I'll branch out to High Guard and the Supply Catalogue, then continue from there.

Thanks again, you've been most helpful.

I was a completeist from 1977 to the end of TNE. I really disliked T4. I've enjoyed Mongoose 1e, but haven't looked much at 2e/update stuff.

In the Mongoose version of the game, at what point did they do the most complete re-envisioning of the characters' roles in space encounters/combat? I hear they've finally focused on the players and tried to give everyone a role (versus prior versions where the RPG on the ground was player centric, but in space, it was almost a space combat wargame and the only people that mattered were your gunner and your pilot sometimes). If there's one fairly complete treatment of a player-centric space combat system that tries to engage all the player characters, where does it live?

Mongoose 1e?
Mongoose 2e?
Mongoose 2022 update?

and if it is the update, does that mean I need anyother book to go along with it as the update might not be full rules?

Thanks - I know I want (have wanted since day 1 in Traveller) a player-centric...See more

The 2022 update is the latest version of the Mongoose Traveller 2e rules. It is a complete game, with a few adjustments mainly in layout and presentation. You do not need to buy another book to play it.

The 2e altered some of the rules so that combat is more seamless between space combat and ground combat. These rules are unaltered in the update.

I heard there was not starship rules in the previous edition, has that changed in that one ?

Can I play Star Trek with it ?
Reply

Rory H June 21, 2022 9:59 am UTC
Yes. It was a criticism in the previous version that basic starship creation rules were not included - and collated into the High Guard supplement.

This Updated version, however, has got basic starship creation rules and also an Index.

Yes, you can play Star Trek with it. There is mooted to be a Traveller: Prime Directive book at some point. However, my understanding is that creator has health and family health problems, which may be significant in slowing down any release. There is also a Element Cruiser boxset and the Deepnight Revelation Campaign which have characters playing commanding officers on giant starships. This is very Star Trek like, albeit in the Traveller Charted Space setting.

The default Traveller game is usually smaller, more independent crew of trading or scout crafts. However, the game has a lot of scope and flexibility for all sorts of campaigns.

Thanks for this question and Rory's response. I've been wanting to use Traveller to run a merchant campaign within the Star Trek universe (specifically the FASA Star Trek universe's Triangle area). FASA actually created their own "Trader Captains and Merchant Princes" stuff for folks to have a Traveller-esque experience within the Star Trek universe, but I fill this version would work best.

I just don't want to convert too much and I truly wish there was a "rules digest" version that nixed the Imperium setting stuff (no offense to the legions of fans of the backstory; as someone not familiar with it, it just gets in the way of learning the game...).

Second question, how crunchy is the game ? I'm more on the light crunch RPG these days (I'm 50 now, the age probably ^^)
Reply
Customer avatar
Rory H June 26, 2022 5:15 am UTC
Light crunch. The basic system is Skill (1-4) + Stat bonus (-3 to +3) + 2D6 vs a standard target number of 8. It is generally simpler than D&D. Certain subsystems, like spacecraft design, are more involved but still very straightforward. Not to be confused with other editions of the game that can be a lot more complicated - this one is easy-peasy.

Hello Rory,
The Traveller Prime Directive (TPD) core rulebook is still in development. The Prime Directive campaign setting is the RPG side of the Star Fleet Universe, from Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc. (ADB, Inc.). This universe started some 40-plus years ago with the original Star Fleet Battles (SFB) and expanded over the years through The editions of SFB, it’s various modules, Federation & Empire, it’s various modules, 54 issues of Captain’s Log, and the existing versions of Prime Directive developed for several RPG systems.

But while the SFU is based on most elements in ST:TOS and animated series (under full license from paramount), it diverges from there. It isn’t the Star Trek setting you might know from other RPG publishers nor anything Paramount produced outside of TOS/Animated material. the TPD core rulebook will have SFU versions of the 12 core MGT careers, two additional careers, plus five SFU/Federation specific careers. It will contain fully playable info on several dozen...See more

I did my time in the ADB mines. I still remember the battle royale that took 3 hours to complete one single 32 impulse turn... and we had to use multiple sets of counters given the vast number of fighters and drones that were out there...

Still a great one one-on-one cruiser battle game, but man does the rules presentation changed for the better (in the larger community.... I haven't played SFB since 2000 likely). Those old 1.3.7.4.1 organization and the walls of text with little imagery is hard to go back to.

Glad you're making something more fun for ST :)

I'd also love an answer to these questions.

I'm baffled by the fact that people who make a Sci-Fi game, in 2023, can't figure out version numbers.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
