Chains of Asmodeus
by Matt E. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/11/2024 06:53:52

This is a fantastic primer for each layer of the Hells, without being overly packed with information - considering that the goal is to travel to the deepest layer of the Hells. If you like infernal adventure, you will enjoy this campaign a lot. Parties will need to be very aware of the dangers of this campaign, as TPK opportunity seems to be pretty high here, ot at the very least, characters may be corrupted or possibly changed.

The choice of three patrons allows some choice in how the characters choose to run their adventure, and previous players of Avernus or Baldur's Gate will enjoy the references to previous content. I love the corruption mechanic and infernal weapon stages are lovely flavour. You can get magic item pricing for some vendors(!!!), and there are plenty of opportunity to tempt players with power - just just for combat, but for roleplaying strengths as well. The Soul searching objectives give characters a personal hook in addition to the overall narrative.

However, the archdevil art is disappointingly bland. It is almost certainly AI generated, which is a disappointing choice for some of the biggest enemies in the game, especially when compared to the actual art in the game made by commissioned artists. Also, while Asmodeus is a being very few mortals have ever witnessed, he is still the Big Bad, and there is not a lot of facetime with him for the characters. Your group may find this offputting, and I would breadcrumb some communication with him in each Layer to keep their interest. Patron objectives are secondary to the player's personal objectives and seem light in comparison to the overall book - understandable, considering there are three of them - which may end up having players question their motives. Ensure the souls they wish to save have enough of a hook for them!

Player's Handbook, Revised (2e)
by James [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/10/2024 09:11:24

Got the print on demand version. You can get the same content (ad&d 2e) for free many places but it feels good to have a physical book to call your own. The book came in great shape. A much thriftier alternative to buying an old (usually beat up) book off eBay for inflated prices.

This is the best Adventurer's League module I've played; some great encounters, good roleplay, and an overall unique and memorable scenario!

B2 The Keep on the Borderlands (Basic)

Disappointing that PDF isn't searchable and the POD prints the map too close the spine, cutting off important parts in the middle.

The World of Krynn Trail Map
by Paul R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/05/2024 17:50:22

The map is in sections, not put together into a composite image. The images around the edge of the continental map, copied from Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of the Dragonlance World, are missing the borders, so they can't be pieced together correctly in order without information not in the download. The main map of the continent of Ansalon is missing edge sections, so trying to piece the individual map segments back together results in four vertical bars of missing map.

This release looks like someone at WotC has just downloaded the pirated version of the map that has been kicking around for years online and uploaded it for sale without doing any checking to make sure it's complete. As of the date of this review (6 Jan 2024), don't waste money on an incomplete jigsaw of a product.

Dungeon Master's Guide (1e)
by Nicholas [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/03/2024 13:59:15

I discovered AD&D in 1999. My first encounter was 1st ed and I was hooked. At one point I owned the core books however due to life, they now are in someone else's hand but today I'm able to revist those days, reprint or not I'm overjoyed. 100 percent amazing thank you drivethurpg for this moment in time. Many more orders to come guaranteed.

In the Cage: A Guide to Sigil (2e)
by Conor P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/01/2024 13:08:26

I purchased the print on demand softcover version. Others have mentioned that the Planescape books have poor printing, with dark images and occasional fuzzy text. I have had no such issues. Text is clear throughout and the images are printed with great quality. There do seem to be some extra pages included in the back of the book, one is a Dragonlance map and another is a page of different unrelated to Planescape maps. These may have been included by accident but they do not disrupt the book. The scans seem high quality and I am very happy with my purchase and intend to purchase other Planescape POD materials.

The Shattered Circle (2e)
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/30/2023 12:07:30

This was the first or second module I ever ran, back in the 99-00 school year.

There is ALOT of adventure packed in here. If you played 3e/5e and enjoyed the Sunless Citadel, this is another meaty dungeon crawl with factions by the same author.

PHBR12 The Complete Paladin's Handbook (2e)
by Daniel [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/28/2023 18:42:31

So, while this is kind of an amusing piece of gaming history, be warned that it has not aged very well. There's some fairly problematic text in here, for example;

"A paladin himself may choose his own beloved and declare his love. This declaration is equivalent to an ethos vow; the paladin must remain true to his beloved from that moment onward. Alternately, the DM may force the issue by observing the paladin's behavior. If the paladin seems unusually attracted to a particular NPC—asking about her, staring longingly at her, fawning over her—the DM should point out that the paladin is exhibiting early signs of courtly love. If the paladin persists, the DM may declare that the NPC has become the paladin's beloved. If he likes, the DM may require the paladin to make a Charisma check. If the check fails, courtly love exists."

This effectively amounts to the GM enforcing highly dysfunctional relationships through game mechanics. Clearly this kind of stuff is modeled on the Lancelot/Guenevere love triangle that shows up in Le Morte d'Arthur, but to have actual game mechanics around it and suggest that the GM force the issue...well, it's not great.

Thankfully D&D has come a long way in distancing itself from this kind of thing, but a modern reader may be a bit surprised at some of the stuff that's in here.

Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil (3e)
by Clifton [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/25/2023 17:24:38

I was able to run this module in 2023 and I have the following things to say about it:

It's an AMAZING sourcebook for monsters, NPCs, encounters, towns and dungeons. If you buy this book you'll never need to roll up a random NPC ever again. You'll have a full book of ready-to-go encounters complete with spells, stat blocks and equipment. It's absolutely amazing.

The intro dungeon is great, but everything after that needs a lot of conversion in order to work. The Crater Ridge are absolutely MASSIVE and I had to throw half of it out completely. If you try to run this adventure as-written, be prepared for a slog. I recommend picking the parts that look cool and throwing the rest out.

The new monsters, magic items, classes and domains are great. This book is packed with great stuff.

In conclusion, it's an almost mandatory sourcebook for 3rdedition. It's essentially a Monster Manual, Magic Item Compendium and NPC Codex all in one.

Chains of Asmodeus
by Karthik N. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/23/2023 09:59:24

Was very excited for this but was extremely disappointed for the following reasons:

  • poor art quality
  • poor world building
  • no choice of outcomes, very linear and railroaded
  • NPCs not fleshed out enough
  • magic items are boring
  • no encounters with the arch devils

If you want info on the nine hells, I would recommend Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes instead

DDAL05-02 The Black Road (5e)
by Benjamin H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/17/2023 20:51:53

This adventure is highly recommended for a reason. I've run it twice now and it's great fun with exciting set pieces and really nice guidance regarding how to resolve situations using skills.

If you're interested in using areas of Faerun beyond the Sword Coast, it's also a great springboard for adventuring further east. I happen to have made the Anauroch Desert an important location in my home game, and it was nice to play an adventure set specifically in this under-utilised location.

Priest's Spell Compendium Vol 3 (2e)
by Graziano [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/15/2023 13:04:23

The volume is largely incomplete, as about 40 pages are missing. This is an amateur 'pirate' scan that has been circulating on the net for years and which WoTC has made its own, without improving OCR quality or implementing the missing pages. They are aware that these pages are missing but have been saying for years that the file will be updated as soon as the original material is available. Apparently, the only thing missing is the will to give those who want to buy this product, the COMPLETE manual. Shameful behaviour to say the least.
