I think it is really smart to release a free quickstart guide. I feel this guide could do a better job of hand holding new players through combat. It is not very intuitive. But the design and layout is great.

Star Trek Adventures: Core Rulebook
Publisher: Modiphius

This is a great book. I love the layout and the design. They did a great job of capturing the essence of Star Trek. My only complaint is that if you are new to this game system... the rules are not very intuitive. Particularly with combat. I have read and reread over and over again trying to understand "how do I attack, what do I roll". Its such a basic thing that should be easy to find... but it isnt. Or at least it isnt explained very well. The beginning adventure could do a better job of "hand holding" in that regard.

Twilight: 2000 4th Edition Core Set

The theme is great. The artwork is amazing. I really like the encounter deck. Which is really smart because they can release new encounter decks over time to expand the game. Same with the map, I love that idea. BUT I despise there only being 4 levels of expertise/competency and I really don't like it being tied to a die type (d6/d8/d10/d12). If feels like an arbitrary design decision that works for a "one off" game. But if you want the option for a long term campaign with actual character development... 4 levels doesnt get you very far. Unfortunately, I don't see how that decision can even be fixed with a supplemental book either. Using percentile dice for skills would have been better design decision for long term play. Or even a d6 mechanic that increases the number of dice rolled based on how skilled the person is (2d6, 3d6, 4d6....10d6, etc). So the game works fine for one off games... or really short campaigns. But if your crew is travelling from Poland to the US? Forget about it. They will be rolling all d12's for everything before you even cross the Atlantic. Bummer.

Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition - Keeper's Rulebook
Publisher: Chaosium
by Jeremy C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/04/2021 09:21:44

Call of Cthulhu is and has always been a fantastic RPG. The newest 7th edition is a nearly perfect RPG. I could not give this 5 stars for two reasons. There are two updates to the rules that I absolutely abhor and I wish they had not done in 7e.

Bonus/Penalty Dice: This is clearly a D&D5e ripoff of the advantage/disadvantage system. Chaosium's implementation is overly convoluted. "Roll percentile dice then reroll only the 10's die, choosing higher/lower 10's". Ridiculous. Why not just reroll the percentile dice? Or, better yet, lets not even use this dumb rule at all. If an investigator deserves an advantage or disadvantage merely award a +/- 10% to the roll. I absolutely hate the Bonus/Penalty dice mechanic. It takes an otherwise a great game system and makes it clunky. I wish at the very least that this had been made an OPTIONAL rule.

Stats changed to percentiles: Whats wrong with a STR score of 3 to 18? After 6 editions why change it be 01 to 100? This seems like an arbitrary change made to create the illusion of an "overhaul" of a system that worked great before. This change was completely unnecessary.

Other than those two things, its a fantastic game. Heres to hoping they fix those garbage changes in the 8th edition.

I really wanted to use this product in my Roll20 games. Unfortunately, the files already have big bright thick grids on them. Which is terrible for VTT. Gridless map files are so much easier for Roll20 because the user can put their own gridlines and make them has bright or dim as they like. PLEASE update this product to include both the gridded and gridless map files.
