DDAL00-09 Minsc & Boo's Guide to Stuff and Things

Minsc said there were lots of pages, but I only needed to see page 10, with the most glorious Flumph domain. This needs to be AL legal, or maybe the only playable class and domain allowed for a campaign. I think it would be very popular. Anyway, this is the best material ever written for D&D and all should purchase this! Go for the eyes with a squirt, Boo!

Wait, I also found the adventure. This was the best adventure ever written. It has the best villain plan, and the best festival. Oh, and Flumph-ale is really very tasty. When will there be an Adventurerers League Flumphapalousa battle interactive? Or maybe a D&D Open? Everyone should play Clerics of the Flumph domain. This is a great idea. It would not be the best adventure ever written... it would be just a tribute to this one.

Warriors of Sehanine

This is an absolutely beautiful adventure. The art and layout are fantastic! The inclusion of art as handouts is a nice touch, and the maps are available as separate files. One of the overland maps has alternate versions with various reveals, perfect for online display or using a tablet at the table to illustrate the change.

The adventure itself has a really good story with a compelling hook. The reveals are more rich and rewarding for the DM than most, and reading the premise and opportunities is fun for the DM. Traveling to the first main adventure site includes "random" encounters, some of which are very interesting and tie into the larger narrative in clever ways. This really makes the encounters compelling. Encounter areas provide great Forgotten Realms lore that is useful and pertinent. Monsters often have interesting quirks and tactics that reveal personalities and make them feel more real.

The final foe has some options, and DMs should read over the text to ensure they understand where the foe appears (and potential foe allies) and how the maps work. I'm not sure much is gained from the complexity, but some will likely enjoy it. Otherwise, just plan on a bit of extra preparation. The NPCs are awesome, so preparation here is recommended and enjoyable to bring them to life and use all that they offer.

There are a few typos (the A Call to Arms section on page 3, for example) and some text could be streamlined (no need to mention "Warrior of Sehanine Appendix A" after every single NPC name in a paragraph, for example), but this is minor feedback compared to the really strong adventure. With the price being so low for what it offers, this is easily a 5-star adventure and is strongly recommended.

Thank you for your wonderful review. This means a ton to us. Yes, while the different options complicate a bit the preparation, we wanted a bit of replayability so the DM could even invite player's that already enjoyed the module and get thrown off by single changes and experience something new. As for the typos we fixed the "A Call to Arms" section and others we found on the way and will be on the lookout for more and update the PDF accordingly, thank you for alerting us to those!

I received a complimentary copy of this adventure, and I am very glad I did. This is a very nicely balanced monk path, with features that reflect 5E power levels well while being interesting, compelling, and fun to play.

I love that you also get a how-to guide on grappling, which on its own will be worth many times the cost for most players and DMs!

Finally, the magic items make this an even better deal. And it's all well written and laid out. Awesome purchase. Recommended!

I found this to be tremendous fun and well written. The author makes great use of the new adventure format and it's again obvious why he was selected as a Guild Adept. This is a fun adventure to drop into the larger Dragon Heist campaign, or into any urban adventure. (Note: I was provided a copy of the adventure, though I actually had it in my cart when I received it and was going to purchase this.)

DDIA-XGE Underworld Speculation

This is a fun 2 hour adventure. It can technically run a bit faster than that, but it's unlikely given the fun environment. It is a bit hard to review because a big part of the fun is the reveal around where the adventure takes place. I won't spoil it here, but it works really well.

The encounters are interesting and entertaining, with neat foes and cool environments. The plot is engaging and there are some decisions for PCs to make which result in fun play. Various aspects can encourage roleplaying. Some of the combats use an open map, with the DM deciding when to place them. It is a nice compromise of open play, and the DM can add to it by using the general terrain features to add to the situations. I ran this for 6th and 8th graders and they absolutely loved it, but will work for any age group.

The rewards are cool, with several common items from the new book.

My only complaint is around the super-cool map, which is unlabeled. At first read it can be hard to figure out where you start! The DM should make notes as to where the encounters take place, which takes some time to figure out. Print out the map and label it during your prep and you will be fine.

Encounters in the Savage Cities
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Teos A. [Verified Purchaser]

This is a steal at this price. If just a couple of these encounters are used in the game, or you use the cool maps, you will get your money's worth as you and your players have a blast.

There are some really fun encounters in this product, and they are self-contained. You can run them as one-shots, but easily add an overarching plot to them. Those jackalweres? They are in the employ of the big bad gal in your campaign. The gang of thieves? A front for your villain. The ease with which this can be done makes the product even more useful.

Each encounter is nicely laid out and has scaling options (often covering APL 1-10). THe maps for the encounters are great line-drawing "battlemap style" art and work well for all kinds of situations. I think many DMs might pay this price just for useful maps.

Karthun: Lands of Conflict

I highly recommend this product. It is an excellent setting book with beautiful art and layout. I'm generally not a big fan of setting books, but this is an imaginative setting with some excellent concepts that grip you right away. And, those concepts are cool both for the players and the DM. For example, the former goddess of justice and valor has become the mournfull and dark godess of death! This appeals to the DM (making the gods dynamic and interesting, while tying into the threats Karthun deals with) and to the PCs (one of my PCs is trying to worship her old values and try to undo the change). Another example is the impending doom coming to the land, which becomes a compelling force for both players and DMs and ties to all of the setting aspects, from different cities to cosmology to the gods to the different player races.

Bottom line: this is a superb read, a beautiful book, super fun as a setting, and filled with ideas you can borrow for any setting.

The Five Temples of the Earthmother Part 1: Life and Moon
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

I am a huge fan of the authors. Shawn Merwin is a force in organized play with an almost endless number of amazing writing projects for Wizards of the Coast. Chris Sniezak has tremendous RPG knowledge and has also written often for D&D organized play, FATE, and other systems.

Their wealth of experience shows here, as the encounters are simple and easy to run, but at the same time provide player engagement and give the players agency in how events unfold. The two temples are really cool. The material stays appropriate for the levels, but is still wondrous and evocative. The overall story is interesting and ripe with future potential. Shawn Merwin has written about the Moonshaes for Wizards of the Coast and does a great job of drawing from the lore of this area of the Forgotten Realms. I look forward to seeing what the team does with the remaineder of the Temples of the Earthmother!

5 Questions

If, like most people, you are eager to find new and better ways to create compelling characters, this is a steal at the price! A single great idea for a character is, to me, well worth that price alone. The value (and star rating) will decrease the more you feel that your characters are as robust as you need them to be. Still, I found the ideas the book provided useful and I will continue to use this in my games (and I feel very good about my character background skills).

This book works well for different genres, extending its utility. The different ways the information is provided makes it fit more needs. For example, it is fun to read over the different ideas and tuck away a few for future use. Or, you can take just questions that are relationships between PCs and use just those in a game.

Many of my favorite RPGs have some system to encourage backstory. I find this product works well with those systems. For example, the book can give you ideas for the background, flaw, ideal, bonds, and personality traits for a 5E character. Or, some sections could help generate your 13th Age PC’s one unique thing.

Full review here. Disclaimer: I was provided a review copy and Brian is a friend. However, I am usually not particularly interested in these kinds of supplements. I was pleasantly surprised and can recommend this product.

Desert of Desolation [BUNDLE]

Hands down, this is my favorite all-time series and Pharaoh is my favorite adventure. The Hickmans show us the brilliance as they transform adventures from the dungeon crawls of old to inspired narratives (and would later perfect this with Ravenloft).

Each of these adventures is filled with imaginative encounters, cool traps and puzzles, great situations, and fun surprises. These are a lot of fun both to DM and to play. They capture an Egyptian and Arabian Nights feel, but also add a unique magical twist as the series progresses. Some of the later locales are amazing, such as a sea of glass in the middle of the desert. I've run these countless times and believe they should be on everyone's gaming shelf.

Dark Sun Boxed Set (2e)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Teos A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/06/2014 13:51:42

The original Dark Sun boxed set is more than a fantastic purchase for collectors. It is one of the best boxed sets ever written, with a fantastic blend of rules, story, setting, maps, art, and introductory adventure. The whole does a fantastic job of immersing the reader, whether player or DM, in this very original setting.

The setting material is especially useful, even for fans who own the more recent 4th Edition Campaign Guide. The organization of the material on the terrain, for example, really brings the desert to life. Many secrets abound within the pages, exciting the DM with ideas for campaigns. The city-states are portrayed in their original vision, before any additional material had been provided and before the release of the Prism Pentad novels. Ideas such as the character tree still have value today, regardless of the edition you use to run Dark Sun.

This product includes the introductory adventure as both a file with are for players and the adventure for DMs, the setting book, the rule book, the cover art 'poster', the map of Tyr, the black-and-white hex world map suitable for adding notes, the color map of the world, and the short story. The art is particularly useful, allowing DMs to digitally copy the art and print it out for use in games. Excellent purchase!

Taking the Narrative by the Tail: GM Intrusions & Special Effects
Publisher: Monte Cook Games
by Teos A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/29/2014 23:42:55

At the price, it is hard to go wrong with this purchase. The document consists of a cover, five pages of content, and a final page with advertisements. The five pages cover the concept of Intrusions, providing additional explanation (beyond the core book) for their purpose and use.

Roughly two pages provide example intrusions of various kinds in bullet format. These are great for idea generation, though for my particular needs I would have liked a focus on typical scenes in a game and why and how to apply some example intrusions.

The document provides some additional example Minor and Major Effects, which I really liked. These are directly helpful in many common GMing situations.

Overall, I find this useful due to the many ideas presented, likely to be useful to nearly any GM. The how-to information is sound, but could have been better at bolstering the concept (especially for a DM not yet comfortable with using Intrusions) and strengthening a GM's methodology for applying Intrusions.
