Aquelarre

Selected Option:

Carts full of corpses slide through the muddy streets of a deserted city. Monks copy manuscripts silently in their cold monastery rooms. A hammer falls again and again on glowing red metal in a blacksmith shop. Fragrant flowers perfume private courtyard gardens. Grim and silent soldiers march the dusty roads in search of enemies, both infidel or faithful. This is the world of the Middle Ages, which our ancestors knew, and which shaped our present.

But beyond this human world, in the most shadowy depths of the woods, in the loneliest cave, in the most obscure cell, in the dimmest chambers of the human heart, legends live. Here, demons haunt castles, elves skulk in the forest, alchemists concoct spells, and witches laugh and laugh around their campfire in a forest clearing bathed in moonlight, as the demon sitting among them raises his goatish head and grins, directly at you, dear reader, saying, "Welcome to the aquelarre; welcome to the coven."

Angel and Demon

A Classic Roleplaying Game

Almost 25 years since it was first released in Spain, Aquelarre ("Coven") finally receives an English translation. Originally from Spanish publisher Nosolorol, this English edition is a gorgeous 570-page, full-color, complete roleplaying game.

Game and Setting

Aquelarre offers everything you expect to find in a fantasy RPG: character creation, game system and magic system. It also includes detailed information about the medieval Iberian setting, the cosmology of angels and demons, and a bestiary.

It is gloriously illustrated throughout. Examples of the brilliant artwork by Jaime Garcia Mendoza illustrate this page.

Player characters in Aquelarre begin life in one of five kingdoms that dominated the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages—Castilla, Aragón, Granada, Navarra, or Portugal. Based on their region, characters may be of various cultures—Arabian, Basque, Castilian, Catalan, Jewish, Muslim, and many more. Social position (from nobility to slave) and father’s occupation affect their capabilities, including profession. Of course, personal characteristics play their part, too. One such is the Rationality/Irrationality rating, which determines how attuned a character is with the Irrational world, how capable with magic, and how susceptible to it. Rituals of faith depend upon a high Rationality instead. Advantages and Disadvantages help to round characters out.

The game system itself relies mainly on percentile rolls against either characteristic ratings or skills based on those (and on character experience). As might be expected from a game that has thrived for several decades now, rules for combat, weapons, and healing are all nicely detailed, with options to suit a variety of playing styles.

The book also includes considerable detail about medieval life in Iberia, from daily business to social mores to fairy tales, besides the expected focus on angels and demons.

Aquelarre

Be warned.
Like making a deal with a devil, Aquelarre is not for the faint of heart. It's not an introductory RPG for younger players. The realistic historical setting is dark. Some of the artwork is disturbing. Nosolorol describes this new edition of the game as "more medieval and more demonic than ever" and they are correct on both counts.

Spells and Rituals

Spells & Rituals of Aquelarre

Here are examples of two spells and one ritual of faith from Aquelarre. The first spell is an example of a level one "white magic" witchcraft spell, and the second spell is an example of "black magic" alchemy.

Spell Examples

We include this sample ritual as it serves to demonstrate that the game isn't filled entirely by demons!

Ritual Example

Creatures of Aquelarre

Besides the legendary Mateo-Txistu listed here, the game includes nearly 60 pages of creatures, from earthly animals to angels, demons, and others.

Example Creature

Experience one of the finest European roleplaying games ever published and treat your play group to a different, darker fantasy campaign.

Man, it's a shame that there won't be any more Aquelarre books in English.

The Nocturnal Media website is defunct.

Hard to be 100% certain but I think Nocturnal Media is defunct (no replies to messages etc), so I imagine there won't be any more translations in the near future. It's a shame as there some excellent supplements - because of this I just bought a couple as pdfs and translated them online - involves working through to fix errors and missing bits (e.g. where formatting causes an issue) but it's good enough.

Stewart Wieck, the founder of Nocturnal Media, passed away. I was hoping Chaosium might take it up since they took up finishing the publication, but it doesn't seem like it.

I'm having a technical issue with the pdf. In foxit reader it freezes for 3-5 seconds when I scroll to the end of a page before the next page loads. It's incredibly annoying. In adobe reader any scrolling whatsoever is so laggy that it's totally unusable. I actually managed to solve the issue through much trial and error by extracting the pages and recompiling but then I don't have the bookmarks. Does anyone else have an issue like this or know why it might be happening?

Even being a heavy file, I can read it without issues in my phone and my five year old Kindle... Perhaps your copy is corrupt, or it's a device related problem?

Hi, can anyone let me know if the print versions on here are DTRPG's low quality ones, or the Kickstarter's intended output?

If you get a Premium one, it’ll be good quality.

As Rory says the Premium color version here is a high quality book. The Standard color is also nice but the colors will be a bit more muted.
The books printed from the KickStarter will be available in retail stores in April.

What kind of binding? $90 for print on demand is a little worrying.

I know this is a little late to the party, but you can get the offset print book from Chaosium for $60 (it comes with the pdf free, but you already have that).

So for sake of Clarity, it's $60 for a copy that isn't as nice as the offset original printing or $90 for a copy that is as nice? Because that really doesn't make me want to buy a physical copy of this book here..

IK don't want to undermine DTRPG, but yes... get an offset from Chaosium while you can. Don't blame DTRPG for being expensive; prices are understandable just because they are one copy at a time. And this game art and layout deserve the effort

In answer to Jeff W's question: "What kind of binding? $90 for print on demand is a little worrying. "

I don't know the specifics of the type of binding they use, but I can tell you how as an end product it feels - terrible.

With a book as large as Aquelarre you need heavy duty binding, but the light weight 'hard cover' feels like cheap cardboard, deforms at every corner (even though the cardboard sleeve envelope was undamaged in shipping) and the front and back cover (as well as the spine of the book) feel loose against the light but very numerous pages.

If you want an example of a very large book where no expense was spared on the binding, the Dresden Files RPG is probably the finest example of heavy duty book binding on a premium quality product. For adequate book binding, Paizo who is famous for very thick Core Rulebooks (Pathfinder 2e specifically since 1e was famous for it's shoddiness) shows that with a little more effort you can make a tome feel durable...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
